If NetBIOS is taken out, how will netadmins and support connect to other computers on their LAN? Such as \\servername or \\clientname ?

Normally SMB rides on NetBIOS, but from win2k on, SMB can run directly on TCP/IP -- that's why you can disable netbios on win2k+ and have your network still work. Additionally, CIFS (successor to SMB) is rumored to completely replace SMB/netbios in longhorn (not sure on this).

A LOT of domain admins out there turn of NetBIOS by default because it sucks ... SMB over TCP/IP is a lot better and uses only port 445.

You can also run WINS which converts IP's to names and vice versa.

You can also get to shares via IP without names such as \\10.0.0.1\sharename.

Ah, I forgot all about SMB... doh. Yea, right, \\IP\share, no way, we have ~100 servers and around 3500 client machines.
