I really dont use my qnap 251 nas anymore, but was thinking installing the 2 wd red in a raid configuration on the win10 pc, and then sharing maps from here to the rest of the household.

Dont know anything about how to do it - like at all. lol. I mean is the folders visible on win 10 if i just move the hd? How do i run raid in win 10?
How would you progress? - where to look?

I am assuming you are talking about drives with data? You cannot expect to move drives in a raid config to another raid system without starting from scratch. You need to move the data to an ext usb drive first, then pull the drives from the qsnap and install in pc. Check your bios to see if you have built in raid if not you may want to get a software raid or hardware raid controller.

OK. Thanx. They are with data.
I am considering using just a single drive and then attach the second drive via usb every half year to make a backup (and hide it for theeves :)). Might actually make things more safe in reality. hmm.

I thought you were going to move one to your computer and the other is external backup?
Yeaa. But after research i can see an external box is aprox the same price as a new external 3tb usb drive, (aprox 40 usd difference) so i will go raid. 2 wd 3GB red in raid (mirror).
Its a asus b350m mb (ryzen).
So i just copy the files to the new external drive. Setup raid in bios and copy back?

I was just wondering if using windows 10 software was better or worse than relying on bios setup? - i mean how am i notified if a drive fails when using the bios option? - all new to me have never used raid before except in the NAS and it was just plug and play here.

Thanx for advice.

Huh external enclosure costing the same as a 3tb external drive? I paid like 30 for a usb 2.0 ext hdd enc back in the days.

You see drive failure on post.

If you intend to have backups and to share the data to the household... why move away from a NAS when that is the ideal solution for it?

It makes a bit noise at times and i am sensitive to it.
I dont use the functionality. Remote access whatever.
It uses power.
I dont want to play with it and learn it. To much complexity and unfortunate not time for it. Eg i cant setup my pia on download client. I am just to old for this now. Perhaps another time.
My desktop is completely silent and is 1 meter away from NAS.

Ok. I got a sense of this raid now.

I want a 3.0 or 3.1 enclosore. And yeaa its not actually about money anyway.
Now more split about noise from raid and non raid vs the tad extra safety. Not business but family pics. And there is backup like two times year.

Win 10 recognized my raid (mirror) drives just fine when I moved them from a Win 7 machine I had as a backup PC for all of the laptops in the house. Win 10 asked me a few questions about keeping the config and I said yes and have never had a problem or lost any data during the switch out.
