Why do people have to turn off their machines? As I walk around the office, I'm always noticing that people turn their @#$%&^! machines off. Cow killers. :|

They just don't understand! I feel your pain! I come in in the morning any my herd is cracking about 22MKeys/sec... by the end of the work day, it's around 40MKeys/sec... imagine if they were running 24x7! If they only understood!

One thing I found that works is telling them how they are assuring premature death of the machine being as it's so hard on the system to boot, reboot, etc.
Actually uses less electricity when idling (with that little cow in the systray of course)

When I'm there late I turn the PCs back on and turn off the monitors. Luckily, we run the backups at night so most people have to leave their PCs on if they want it backed up. Why not configure the backups to run at night so you can have the same advantage?

I just tell them to log off so all the security is still in place.

We had a problem with building security for a while. Computers near outside exits would be missing some Mondays. I told people that thieves (read - janatorial staff) were much less likely to take a computer that was turned on.
