No More Late Fees

Late Fees

cliff notes:
-no more late fees
-still due dates but with 1 week grace period
-not return in 1 week, you now owned the, movie or game minus rental fee.
-30 grace period to resell the product back for store credit, restocking fee may apply.

What total marketting BS. What is this ridiculous wording? They are still due in 2 days but you have a one week "grace period"? What? That means they are due in 9 days. But they don't want to say that, because they like being able to say there's no late fees. And I guess technically there aren't, although I would consider being charged the inflated price for the dvd or pay a restocking fee is pretty much a late fee.

They are working on changing their business model to compete. It really isn't that hard to understand the new rules if you read them.

FVCK THAT!

Netflix all the way.

I never said it was. I was merely commenting at how much they are spinning this policy into bs-land rather than saying what they are really doing.

Keep the movie for a week? So... that means either blockbuster will never have popular new releases in stock to rent, or they will have to have alot more than they do now. (how the heck can they make money having to carry that many more movies. I cant see many people buying the movies after the 1 month)

Another point OP didn't mention.

If the customers don't want to purchase the movie or game, they can return the product within 30 days for a credit, less a restocking fee.

i think we all understand the rules, it's just kind of stupid the way they worded it. I agree with torpid. It's not due in 2 days, but 9...

Late fees are there for a reason, it's so people don't keep new releases for a week or whatever. There are lots of people who would like to rent the movie while it's sitting in someone's house.

Now as far as their bogus late fee charges, that was just shady on blockbuster's part. I was hit up w/ a few "late fee" charges on movies I never rented. Or movies that I rented 2 years ago maybe.

They spelled it out fairly clearly in the article, IMO.

I don't see it as a BS policy. The "restocking fee" would have to be rather high to come anywhere near the late fees usually charged.

you get charged the restocking fee after the grace period. is it that hard to return the movie given the damn grace period?

i think this is great. i havent been to blockbuster in a while but this makes me a bit more comfortable about renting movies there when i get the chance to.

I like the policy, no question; I just think it's BS to market it as eliminating late fees and offering a "grace period".

Well its like a security blanket, you know when its due but you don't have to sweat it out if you forgot to return it on time because you have a 1 week grace period, but i don't think most people are going to want to get charged for the full movie price and then go through the hassel of returning it for store credit .

So if you rent a movie lets say it cost 20$ you pay the 4 dollars to rent it and you forget to return it in the 1 week grace period, now you get charged an extra 16$. I'm sure if you try to resell it back to them you won't get the full 16$ more like half 8$ plus there could be that restocking fee, so in the end blockbuster still wins.

also yes there could be less movies around to rent because if you rent a 2 day movie, you now have the 2 days plus a week after, and if you rent a 1 week movie you now have 2 weeks to return it.

This will make more people lazy at returning movies.

Personally i'm a big fan of netflix but i had to cancel it because i didnt have enough time to watch the movies so i would only get to 3 in 1 month, so i been renting from blockbuster when i have time but i have several free rental coupons.

Sure you don't pay late fees for Netflix, but I never really understood the argument that Netflix is better in this aspect, since you're still paying the $17/mo. even if you hold those 3 movies for all 30 days, as opposed to having a quick turnaround time. Financially, you're still losing money the longer you hold those movies.

Netflix is cool, but if you and your girl just want to pick up something on a Friday night to watch, something spontaneous, Netflix can't help you. Having B&M video stores are important. The wording on this is a little ... whatever the word is, but they are helping consumers out. It's not that hard to return a movie with an extra week.

It is in Netflix's favor to have very lazy renters. The goal is to ship as few movies as possible while maintaining a large subscriber base.

Grace period? I'll agree that the wording on this campaign is for stupid people. I understand how it works, but the way they are wording it is for stupid people.

Wonder if we'll be charged MSRP on the video or the rental price that Blockbuster has to pay for videos. Maybe that has changed, but back in the day rental places had to pay upwards of $100 per video for the rental license.

If you hold all three movies for one month yeah you loose, but if you do it correct you can probably get 12 movies a month, maybe more.
it takes about 2 days average for me to get a brand new movie back.
