no more high speed internet.... :(

Well, I've had to move recently, and the wife and I moved to an area where the high speed internet is not available (unless you consider satelite... too expensive). Using a dialup internet, visits to the forum take alot longer to connect to, and it's more difficult to send the Seti WU's... It's just not as much fun anymore. I'll continue to crunch the WUs for Seti for awile, and I hope I can make it to the 2500 mark, but no more races, and I'll only be stopping in here a couple of times a week instead of my usual couple of times a day....
Even checking on my posts take time, and responses might be missed from me not checking in as often as I used to.... So if I miss anything... well.....

🙁

But... keep on crunchin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Same thing happened to me couple months ago. Went from DSL for 2 years to dial-up. At first I called my computer every name in the book. Even though dial-up does suck it gets better. You are still use to the broadband speed. Give it a week at dial up and the frustration isn't as high.

Dasm! :disgust: Well, whatever your level of particiaption, stop in when you can! 🙂

Sorry to hear that Bob🙁 ,I would conisder not moving to an area without Broadband!:Q😉

Do you at least get aboout a 50k connection?
Also make sure you get the v92 drivers for your modem ,this will boost upload speeds from 33k to 48k

I feel for you. I used to hate coming home from school; we live in the boonies. Recently got Direcway (satellite)...its not nearly as good as other broadband, but several orders of magnitude better than dial-up. I think the monthly charge is $70 (initial hardware was $500 though 🙁)

I guess it's not so bad for me since I've lived on pretty good 56K all of my internet-life. One learns ways to get around the slowness by multitasking internet and non-internet related programs, and by using a tabbed web browser such as Mozilla to simplify loading multiple pages simultaneously, and reading others while those download. Don't worry, it's not the end of the world, you'll get used to it. And if you think SETI WUs are bad to upload on dialup, you ain't seen nothin' until you've seen a F@H WU. Some of those suckers are freaking monsters. :Q

That was one of the requirements when I was shopping for a place to buy. 😉

Make sure you use a popup/ad blocker so you don't waste precious bandwidth loading junk.

I recommend the Proxomitron.

I did RC5 and a lot of seti on dialup, I have only had high speed for about a year. I would just download 15 or so workunits and send them late at night.
I have a dialup that I use when traveling coppernet, it is $100.00 a year and has phone numbers all over the place with really good hookup speed usually around 48 to 49, I am different I guess the dialup speed dont bother me to much.

Bleep

also go into your prefrences and turn off fusetalks bloat...that will speed things up a bit too.

I have dialup and get about 16/14 🙁, I see no hope of getting broadband in my area as long as I live here.

I hope you can get use to it.

Bob, I've used dialup a lot because I travel so much. For over a year I ran a SetiQueue over dialup with 60 WU/day. I had it update between 11:00 PM and 1:00 AM. It worked great most of the time. The only time it was a problem was when I'd be away and the thing would connect.

Anyway, good luck and don't get too discourage as you will get use to it.

Thanks for the words of encouragement, and the info from those that have been using dialup regularly....

I have a V92 modem, and I am getting speeds of 49.3 most of the time, so that's not bad... I 'spose I'll get used to not have the "always on" thing, and the pages loading like they do...

With me working with computers all day, with obviously a high speed connection, it's really difficult to go back when at home...

Whatever, though.... Something I need to deal with, and whining about it doesn't help anyone...

I'll see you all here in the forums... maybe not as often, but I'll be around.....

🙂

Hey Bob....I have dial-up and a Zoom external v92 modem. With it I have modem on hold..........a program that lets you be online and still take calls & not interupt you internet connection. It may not give you blazing speed, but you can stay online pretty much 27/7 and still get your calls. You should look into that 😀

What planet do you live on that has a 27 hour day? 😛🙂
Just kidding.

Well, if you need to download some large files, you're more than welcome to come over to my house and make use of my DSL line, BobTheWizard. 🙂 Sorry, I don't think I can give you a ride though. :Q
