No more free AT webhosting?

I just came across his Dartworth's thread saying that the server is being taken down on December 27th, 2007. Does that mean there is no more free AT endorsed hosting? I never used his hosting, but I considered it and always appreciated the fact that it was being offered. If there isn't any replacement service, I think I could we (the AT community) could rent a dedicated server or two as a "reseller", and a few users could pay for it monthly to use a portion of the bandwidth and space, and share the rest of it for free with the rest of the forums (in effect, subsidizing it). I need some hosting for a site now (won't post it because I'm not trying to advertise) and I wouldn't mind subsidizing some hosting for people who don't need too much.

This was done, almost 3 years ago. RossMAN and I did a lot of the initial work and at one point in time I had 3 servers sold at cost that were filled with AT'ers. Eventually, it just became too much work to be practical. The management aspect of the server gets put on one person (previously it was me) and it become a hassle as certain people needed certain things done to accommodate them and I couldn't dedicated enough time and respond as fast I was necessary. Although the idea of hosting at cost isn't a bad one for a group of people, from personally experience I say it really won't work for a forum; you get into dilemmas about how manages it, who collects the payments, and who gets root or reseller privileges. Then, it becomes even more complicated when people cancel and you have to find people to fill their space or else the person whose in charge of collecting money and paying the bill ends up personally taking the financial hit. In the end, it's just not worth the hassle.

And I can't say that there won't be any more free AT hosting. Unfortunately, the combined efforts between Ross, Ankit, Jim, and I didn't work out as we had planned when we envisioned the four of us taking over the roles of managing the free hosting. I do, however, still desire to offer the free hosting for AT, and am in contact with Jim about changing the current VPS into my name. If that doesn't work out, chances are that I'll end up offering it myself.

Thanks for all your work regardless. I was in on your free hosting a while back and appreciate the time and work you put into it.

I figured it would be a hassle to manage hosting. Thank you, and Ross, Ankit, and Jim as well, for your efforts and any effort you guys put in the future.

Thanks for the effort.

I am still using the free hosting for my site. Should I inform the users of that site that the current hosting will be going away?

See the stickied thread -- it's not going anywhere.

Me too...just ask Eric about our ongoing talks. Granted, I'm a piddly ant in his scheme of things, but he's still been great to me!

Eric came onto me on AIM once. Or was it the other way around?

He's helped me out more times than I can remember, thanks Eric :p

We need a general "AnandTech member appreciation thread".

I'm sure there are hundreds of members who have helped each other in one way or another.

We really don't :). There are tons of AT'ers who have helped each other out a lot more than I have over the years and Ross's "AnandTech member appreciation thread" would be a much better idea.
