No more coffee stirrers...

I like my coffee black, just like my women so this doesn't effect me but my employer has stopped stocking coffee stirrers in the break rooms and started putting hard pasta in place of the stirrers... at least it appears to be hard (uncooked) pasta.

Anyone else see this at their office? I'm not sure if the pasta is just cheaper of if they can check off some "green" box on a list they have for complying with some ecomagicwarmfuzzy initiative.

Only link on this I see:

Sounds like a reasonable idea to me, especially if you used plastic previously. Plastic coffee stirrers are height of American decadence, and wastefulness. Using valuable resources to stir coffee for ~10", and then throwing it out is retarded, and a good example of what's wrong with the country.

You realize you can reuse plastic stir straws right? I use mine until the end is chewed to shit then I get a new one.

OP should bring cinnamon sticks to work. Those work good for stirring and they taste good when chewed.

I'm not sure the ones we had were plastic, I think they were a recycled paper product... I remember reading something about it on the box. They're gone now though so I can't confirm...

A lot of things can be reused, but it doesn't mean they are. I'm sure you're in the minority in saving your stirrer. Some people will use disposable cups, and get a new one every damned time. Ridiculous...

Ewww. Wouldn't they break down in your coffee? I've chewed construction paper before (spit balls) and it's not tasty.

I remember when drinking straws were paper. They kind of worked, but broke down towards the end. I'd expect a paper stirrer would work ok.

I never understood the need for them and I drink my coffee with sugar & cream. Crazy I know, but I just put the sugar & cream in the cup first, then pour in the coffee. No stirring needed.

If you really believe this you have no sense of perspective at all.

Far better than any conventional way to mix!

Also if you fear contamination pick up a few PTFE coated neo magnets for your mixing pleasure. About as easy as falling off a log backward - to make this. 😀

Nifty. I think I've seen something like that for commercial use. I might be wrong, but I feel like I saw a video using that principle for mixing bar drinks. Definitely a good visual presentation :^)

I've seen a number of places moving over to a very dense cardboard like product for stirrers. No clue on the overall environmental impact of them, but at least they can be more easily broken down and/or made from recycled products.

Yes magnetic stirring tables have been around in labs for years. Quite expensive compared to a homebrew solution.

Probably the first time I saw it in person is using a dynaflo aquarium filter motor. It had a small shaded pole motor with a round ceramic magnet on top and would cause a small impeller inside the box filter to spin (had a magnet attached below). This results in no seals or failure point. Of course now everyone uses no moving parts (just a coil) with a single magnet inside. Problem with those is they don't work properly off "approximate" sine wave power and get weird if the frequency is not stable, etc.

It would not be hard to incorporate this into a mug or thermos and run it off a small li-poly pack. One could fill a thermos with just hot water and when they want to eat they could add the powder and turn on the juice and have it mixed perfectly, for example.

pasta uncooked isnt the smartest thing to put in your mouth. probably wont hurt you, but u can have the uncured rat fecal.

i bet all the plastic coffee stirrers used in america in one day can all fit into one single garbage truck. they are not our problem.
