No More Chrysler?

I just read this news from a Mopar site I regularly visit - basically says that Chrysler is going to be terminated:

<< Several news sources have reported that Daimler-Benz plans to restructure its brands. German magazine Capital, quoted by Reuters, said that Chrysler would lose control over its technical development, which would move to Stuttgart. The new DCX areas would be:

Luxury - Mercedes
Compact / small cars - Smart, Mitsubishi, and Chrysler (note: Chrysler would not actually build any compact cars, but would re-label Mitsubishis and Hyundais).
SUV - Jeep, Mercedes SUV, Mitsubishi SUVs
Commercial trucks

The Neon, as previously assumed and reported, would be replaced by a Hyundai. The high-end LX series in the works appear to be dropped from this lineup, along with specialty cars such as the Viper.

Other sources have already reported that while Mercedes dealers in Mexico will sell the Smart car, Chrysler dealers will rebadge more Hyundais under the Dodge label.

This is very important news. If true, Chrysler will basically end as an independent entity, not even qualifying as a division of Daimler-Benz. It will have the same status as Oldsmobile within General Motors, at best. Mitsubishi, likewise, will surrender its autonomy under this plan. Many Americans are likely to lose their jobs as Chrysler stops designing cars and trucks. Recent strides in quality and feel will be abandoned in favor of a Mitsubishi-and-Hyundai strategy.

In essence, this is the death knell of Chrysler, if (a) it is true and (b) it is approved.

If you are a stockholder, now is the time to protest and to call for Schrempp's ouster. If you are not a stockholder, write to DaimlerChrysler and to Federal authorities. For DaimlerChrysler, note that this does not make business sense; prior to September, few would question Chrysler's greater ability to survive. For Federal authorities, bring up that this is clearly not a merger, and that Daimler-Benz committed fraud when they posed a takeover as a merger. If you were a Chrysler stockholder, consider joining one of the class action suits.

Woo-hoo! I've hated Chryslers all my life. Owned THREE of them actually...bad move. First one, a LeBaron, actually BLEW up. BLEW UP. :(

Second two were Sebrings and they're just crappy cars, maintenance all the time.

quality was always questionable, but it would suck to see them just disappear. :|

And to have all those people to just loose their jobs. I think the class action lawsuit is starting to look good.

Could it be because Chryslers liquid assests aren't so hot 2billion, compared to 11-13billion Ford and GM have. It would be considered good for Daimler if there is an economic downturn, with only $2billion in cash Chrysler would have a tough time in a resession. Its been a BAD year for the big 3 american car manufactures, this doesn't suprise me.

The Prowler line of cars was being ended soon from my understanding. I thought they were only going to make the through 2002 one they decided to axed the Plymouth brand.

Damn, that's pulling a 3dfx/STB on Mopar. Dodge currently has some kicking trucks and if they even TRY to touch Jeep the name will be tarnished forever.

NFS - you said it, I'm pretty pissed myself. And lmao at the WWII comment! But if this goes through, it'll suck having no Dodge. All these imports will be running around rebadged as American :|

PS - Another car to get the ax: The 300M :|

Also - on the subject of Jeep:

<< A Mercedes executive declared that no Mercedes would have any Chrysler parts, and that Mercedes technologies would be used exclusively on Mercedes vehicles "at first" rather than being spread through the company's other marques. The first statement would seem to be contradicted by the next-generation Mercedes SUV, based heavily on the Grand Cherokee. On the other hand, we suspect Mercedes executives will soon be retroactively claiming the Grand Cherokee as a Mercedes, and taking credit for the success of the shared platform >>

Mmm...might've been. I tried to push all that out of my memory, I have a tendency to ball up into fetal position and cry when I think about it. ;)

I really hope this doesn't mean the end of the 2002 RAM with the HEMI's in it... They needed that the Current Magnums were in need of help.

No way this will happen. They are not going to give up Caravans, which are some of best selling vehicles. Probably they will keep the viper in some shape, unless they want people to boycott Daimler Chrysler forever. Moving development to Germany: Great. Maybe for once they will design a good chrysler.

<< Recent strides in quality and feel will be abandoned in favor of a Mitsubishi-and-Hyundai strategy. >>

Bwuahahaha. what quality? and the only "feel" you are going to get from an american car is the feeling that it could stall any second now.

Dodge has good trucks? Depends what you think good is.

Out of the big three, its Chevy, Ford, and then Dodge.

Tool,
My 91 Dodge is running stronger than ever, I know many people that swear by their Dodge's. My engine is bombproof pretty much, which many others who own the same engine will say so. I'm not sure about their newer offerings, but I'd buy another Dodge in a heartbeat.
