I'm never going to buy/ride a cheap bike again.

Last night I got 14 stitches because of one...

I was standing up, just starting to speed up, standing up on the pedals. Somewhere along the drivetrain... (chain, gears, derailers) it gave way. I went over the handle bars... (it was probably when I was giving it the most power) Landed on my face/elbows... I got all 14 stitches on my face... I'm not looking to great right now. If I get bad scarring from it I'll probably have to go to the plastic surgeon, which my parents will most likely pay for... but if I would've got a better bike in the first place, I probably wouldn't be going through this. It blows.

I think I'm going to get a Trek 7x00 series most likely...

I'm up to about 40 stitches in my 18 years of life.

Why include the part I bolded?

Also, next time you post about an injury, be sure to include pics......
.....and now for the mandatory PICS OR BAN!!!!!

If I had a camera, I'd take a picture. The nurses were saying it looks like I had a second mouth... I lost skin, that's why I might need plastic surgery... I've had over 20 stitches before, I'm not complaining about this, but this set of stitches is quite a bit worse.

No, I was not wearing a helmet... but considering 10 out of the 4 stitches were on my chin and the other 4 were above my upper lip, it wouldn't have made a difference.

Wearing a helmet probably would have significantly reduced the damage.

When you hit the bike store you should get yourself a good helmet to go with your good bike.

Biking without one is quite simply stupid.

Shouldn't you be happy you aren't dead?

Don't give your parents the chance to pay for your funeral.

probably to point out that even though it won't come out of his pocket, it would still suck

even good bikes can have crap like that happen... either the chain stretches, or the cogs are so worn, that you need to end up servicing the bike.... my last bike had that happen to it. i needed a new chain and a new cassette. it sucked :p

Well, I'm going to get a good, nice, light bike that won't require you to stand up so much to get it going....

While yes, I'm glad I didn't die, this was no where near life threatening. The only thing that would/could kill me is infections.

I feel for you Qurazy...I've got a couple good facial scars from biking(drunk) myself. At least you got them stitched up. I usually end up passing out in the grass and not going to the ol' doctor. hehe.

I took a surfboard to the mouth about 5 years ago while surfing one morning and had to have a plastic surgeon stitch me up. My lower lip was split down about an inch and it was two pieces. He did a great job though, there is no scaring at all and my lip lines up perfectly like nothing ever happened.

Edit-To the OP, hope you have a quick recovery!

I hope you have a good recovery. It happens even with the best of bikes. Been there, done that myself. Except, my feet were attached to the pedals, so, me over handlebars, bike over me, me over bike, bike over me, me over bike, bike over me. My wife said I did 3 complete summersaults (the accident was right in front of her when I was trying to show off my sprint speed.) My kneecap was perpendicular to where it's supposed to be, my shoulder may have had a minor fracture (that was one of the places that didn't get x-rayed), and I was very fortunate to not be a vegetable - my helmet was broken in half from one of the impacts on the ground.

Note to anyone reading this thread: the need for a helmet isn't dependent on the speed, unless you run into something like a tree or car... the helmet is dependent on the speed at which your head strikes the ground which only depends on how high above the ground you are. Riding faster only means more road-rash. The impact your head has on the road's surface is the same.

Aye, I almost found this out the hard way at ~35. I always wear one now.

Ten out of the 4 stitches and the other 4 ... There's something wrong with this problem...

MATH Guru says (4-10)-4 = -10?

You gave away some stitches?!
