First off, I'll admit I'm an NSX fanboi. I think it is one of the greatest GT sports cars ever built. Back in 1990, it was the first application of VTEC technology on any consumer production car...previously Honda had only used it in F1. But that was back in 1990. The original Lotus Esprit was a dreamy exotic back when it first came out...with a 4-cylinder engine. Who remembers the Porsche 944? Nowadays they couldn't hold a candle to your everyday Civic Si. A similar problem presents itself with the NSX and its V6 engine. You can only get so much power out of a naturally-aspirated V6! Honda needed new sh*t or they should've gotten off the pot a long time ago.
About the price--the problem is when the original NSX rolled out of the assembly line, it didn't roll off an assembly line. It was meant to compete with exotics so it was built like an exotic...with critical components assembled by hand. Now I don't know if the current engine is still assembled by hand or how much automation they have with NSX production in Tochigi, but I would imagine it is still an expensive car to build, so they can't really lower the price. Look at the glass cockpit and all-aluminum body. Besides, lowering the price would kill the brand...basic marketing.
What they should have done is stopped production of the NSX a long time ago and replaced it with a cheaper, mass-produced watered-down version (would have cemented its status as an exotic with a limited run, though they still don't have trouble holding their value!)
The only other option is to redo it from the ground-up, but I think Honda realizes its too late for that. They should have put in a V8 years ago (like when Lotus did?) If they ever make an almost-supercar again, it will not bear the NSX name.
