No more 40hr work week?

how is it that every new bill proposed by our government is, according to some of these sites, the most horrible piece of legislation ever and will destroy our way of life? i just cant understand how this could possibly be true.
 
This is written by some left wing @sshple. Businesses already have most of the power and these "new" ideas are already practiced by many companies. A lot of companies tell you that you have to take time off work for your comp days. Also why should someone like an areospace engineer get paid time and a half when he gets paid a ton of money per hour, the incentive to work is already there. Some people would also like to work more hours per week but they can't since companies have to pay them more, it helps some but also hinders others in the process. This doesn't look so horrific if you ask me, just different.

It sounds pretty horrid to me, although I realize the article is slanted, how can you put a positive spin on this sh!t?

The Republicans are our saviors. Just ask around here. I almost believe that if they came up with a manditory "nail your testicles to the wall" bill, it would find support here. Ok, let them be the first to do it to themselves and they can tell me how well it works.

The answer is that it is not good for workers. An argument can be made that since it costs business, it adversely affects workers because they are the ones who suffer when a company does. Well, the same argument was made when child labor and safety laws went into effect to protect workers. Businesses didnt like them, they dont like the fourty hour week, and they do not like overtime. It costs the shareholders something. So, would more workers be hired if these protections were elimintated? No, more likely it would be used to increase automation and eliminate jobs thereby increasing "productivity" making costs go down further. Big pay raises and bonuses for execs, because the company now looks better to investors. This is how it really has been working. This sucks, and don't let anyone kid you.

Great. OT helps pay my bills. Without it I'm delinquent. I'm a severely underpaid tech to begin with. I fail to see how this bill helps.
 
This is a f*cking ridiculous proposal - and, BTW, I'm a Republican. Any information on the bill? I'm going to write to my Senator and Representatives . . .
 
Salaried "exempt" workers are already being screwed like this anway. I haven't worked less than 60 hours per week at all at my current job (been there for 2 years or so) without any overtime.
 
Molly Ivans is the left's answer to Rush. Everything she writes is a slap against non-extreme liberals, and everything that the Republicans do is designed to turn you into slaves and then eat your children. If someone wants to find another article backing this up, then we can talk, but this conversation is about as valid as having one over something Rush made up on his show.

Your point has merit, but I haven't seen anything else on it. The only way to be 100% sure is to read the full text of the bill - something your Senators and Congressman may not have done.

I just wrote both of my Senators and my Representative - anyone who feels against this should do the same. It's your right, not to mention your duty, as an American citizen. Think of it as bitching and moaning, but with a higher purpose.

It's not the government's job to regulate the workplace. If a person wants to work and an employer wants to pay, the governemnt has no place to step in and regulate. Governement restrictions on business, as well as poor monetary and fiscal policy, makes people poor.
