no monitor on boot up

I have tried all I can think of and now am stuck.
specs:
asus p5800s motherboard
intel p4 lg775
maxtor sata hd
kingston 512mb (1 stick)
bfg 6800gt video card

I get a power light on the motherboard, no hdd light, my monitor does not turn on. All parts are brand new, I just don't know where to go next, any help would be appreciated!!

some ideas:

-reset cmos 😛

-do you have a mobo w/error beeps? Check those out if so...

-check mobo & ram compatability.

just some stuff off the top of my head...Any other specifics?

The compatibility is one thing I am unure of. Not the memory though. Does this board support the intel 530j?? The intel site suggests that you need a chipset in the 900's, this asus board states it has the 865pe. Would this be a source of conflict??

i would recommend setting up everything outside of the case.

just put the mobo on a cardboard box. install the essentials (RAM, CPU+Properly installed HSF, VIDEO).

plug in the PSU into the mobo and anything that needs power (videocaard?)

check and make sure the CPU fan is connected,

plug in the case's power button, into the mobo's "power up 2-pin" and try turning on your computer.

this is just a start ... but from here we can see what eles could be the problem.

Can you be more specific about what does happen when you switch on.......

What fans start, and for how long?
Any beeps? If not, is the 'CASE SPEAKER' connected correctly?
What LED's flash on, and for how long?
Do the drives seem to switch on, and for how long?
Does the monitor light turn green, even for a second?

Any other things you see, hear, smell, sense - please let us know

Fans come on: case, video card, and cpu fans. Do not shut off.
I hear one beep then nothing. only one time
One green light comes on on front panel.
It does seem like the hard drives spins for a sec, then nothing.
Monitor light does nothing at all.
No burning smell, I sense this motherboard is bad, but I would like to be sure.

I am not at home at the puter now. I will have to try it at home. But I do appreciate the tips, cause I am at wits end with this stupid thing. This is my like 5th build, and never had a problem. Weird

Basically,
Take out the stuff as I said in the last post.
YOUR AIM:
Coax a series of beeps out of the machine.

If still no luck after following the above instructions, then take out EVERYTHING and disconnect ALL wires from mobo except:
cpu/fan
psu
case speaker

Turn on the computer using the power button.
Does it switch on? If yes, you haven't followed instruction.
TAKE OUT ALL WIRES including the headers.

Now, trip the power switch headers with a screwdriver to switch on.
What happens now?

One thing i forgot to mention, and if this is it, I do deserve a swift kick. The heat sink on the cpu is not sitting as perfectly as I would like. Could this be a cause of any problem?

yes - make it sit nicely then post back.

I'll be back in a few hours.
Someone should look after you shortly though.

I'll post more tomorrow. nite nite

I have the heatsink sitting pretty now, and still nothing. Can anyone verify if this is a fried motherboard? I need to order another one if so...thank you.

If EVERYTHING was disconnected, except for cpu/psu/case speaker, and you don't hear anything,
then the problem lies with either
cpu
psu
mobo

Can't be more specific unless you can swap out.

BUT Chances are its a fried cpu if the heatsink wasn't on properly.

1 beep is a good thing, that means it posted. Are you sure the monitor is good, the cable is secure? If you motherboard has onboard video, then try attaching the video cable to the onboard as a lot of times the bios will default the primary display to the onboard. Also, try taking the motherboard out of the case, put it on a non-conductive surface, and try to boot with the minimums(cpu+hsf, 1 stick of ram, video card) Also be sure you have all the proper power connections plugged in, got the square 4pin 12v connector plugged in to the motherboard? Have a power connector plugged in to the video card? What power supply do you have by the way, you didn't mention that and it is one of the most importent parts of the computer..
