I love you people who say all he wants to do is get richer.
If I wanted to get richer, I wouldn't be giving my money away.

Whether he got there by being a good businessman or not (ie: ruthless), he's doing good work, and when you cheat microsoft, you cheat people who recieve money from MS 😛

I'm sorry, every time I think of Bill Gates I think of how ruthless he is in business.

He is one of the most savy businessmen I know, moral and ethics mean nothing to him.

That could almost be considered a compliment till you think how many folks he has put out of business.

That is the American way. This is also one of the main drivers of the "entrepreneurial give back" Bill gates has his foundation, Starbucks funds schools in developing countries, its kind of a payback into the karma fund 🙂

He's already got billions. If he was trying to pay back into karma, he wouldn't be trying to patent everything he can think of to do his best to get rid of linux.

He just wants to get richer. Which I could understand if he only had a few thousands or millions....

It's how business works. To be successfull, you, unfotunately, have to throw people down stairs. It's how teh world really is. If you think otherwise, you are just niave. It's all about number 1. I am just glad that the number 1 here actually donates his money to good causes.

Such is why I will never become a business man. I like having honor and ethics.

business and honor & ethics are not mutually exclusive... what has he done that is so unethical, or dishonorable? poor people aren't the only ones who can be honorable or ethical.

The guy seems like a great guy on a personal level. I can't say I hate him, I just hate the business practices Microsoft (and yes, I realize just about every other large corporation out there) takes part in. for Bill.

It has nothing to do with honors and ethics, by that point you would be saying you dont participate in anything competitive. Business is a competition and there are winners and losers, Bill Gates was a winner.

it's at the point where he's got more than he knows what to do with...

I wonder what kinda cars his kids drive. I wonder what kind of car his dogs drive...
iirc Gates has said that he's "only" set aside 10 million for each of his two kids. It's still a nice chump of change, but hell even the Hilton sisters got something like 30 million apiece.

The rest is supposed to go to his foundation.

I think he put a million each for them...and he drives a ford explorer I believe 😀 He's pretty modest in all aspects except for his uber-n3rd-house

Linux wont rise anytime soon, joe public hates change.

Until linux has better support for games (which it will never have) then I am sticking to MS for gaming, mac for everything else.

Food for thought:

Lets say M$ gets split up and Linux rises as the #1 OS. There'll be enough competition on the field, that the companies probably won't make anywhere close to what M$ was able to make. Thus they may not be able to give grants for research, scholarships for education, donations to charities, etc...atleast not in the sum that Gates and M$ can.

Exactly. At least the £50 for XP Home on my laptop is going somewhere useful after a while.

Warrent Buffett is similar. Second richest man in America, and his kids have gotten next to nothing. Much of the money he has given them was in the form of loans. His foundation will be sitting on a similarly sized chunk of change when he passes away.
