No matter what you say about Bill Gates...

it's at the point where he's got more than he knows what to do with...

I wonder what kinda cars his kids drive. I wonder what kind of car his dogs drive...

My mom's a reference librarian, and her library is a beneficiary of the Gates Foundation...they just got new thin clients for the entire place. 🙂

I'm sorry, every time I think of Bill Gates I think of how ruthless he is in business.

He is one of the most savy businessmen I know, moral and ethics mean nothing to him.

That could almost be considered a compliment till you think how many folks he has put out of business.

iirc Gates has said that he's "only" set aside 10 million for each of his two kids. It's still a nice chump of change, but hell even the Hilton sisters got something like 30 million apiece.

The rest is supposed to go to his foundation.

he's my hero 😀

I think that if he by any chance ever went broke or anything happened to him, the world would know it; I don't mean by hearing it on the news. It would probably bring the economy down, as well as many charities would not function as well if at all. Great guy IMO 🙂

That is the American way. This is also one of the main drivers of the "entrepreneurial give back" Bill gates has his foundation, Starbucks funds schools in developing countries, its kind of a payback into the karma fund 🙂

That is because he doesn't want his kids to grow up thinking money grows on trees and they can do whatever they want to whomever the want (like the hilton sisters) He wants them to make their own way. IIRC Trump gave each of his kids a few hundred grand for their trust fund. I think his words were "enough so that they think they can do anything, but not enough for them to do everything they want" Trump's kids are both very successful, graduating near the top of their class at their respective (ivy league) schools iirc. 10 million is basically Bill's way of saying "listen I didn't start out with this kind of money and look what I did with myself. There are no limits for you."

He's already got billions. If he was trying to pay back into karma, he wouldn't be trying to patent everything he can think of to do his best to get rid of linux.

He just wants to get richer. Which I could understand if he only had a few thousands or millions....

It's how business works. To be successfull, you, unfotunately, have to throw people down stairs. It's how teh world really is. If you think otherwise, you are just niave. It's all about number 1. I am just glad that the number 1 here actually donates his money to good causes.

yeah, something to the effect of nothing. $50 billion to charity and $10 mil to each kid. imagine if he spent a little of that $50b on making computing more secure. the IT industry would save tens of billions each year.

Exactly I dont think its "for the money" anymore for Billy. I think its just a matter of making his company the biggest/best it can be. Period. And in turn that will make more money for his foundation(s) and Charities.

As somebody said earlier, its the American way. He has lived the dream and gets persecuted for it. This is Leave it to Beaver. You can't play nice and turn out #1. This is real life.

And yet people still expect you to do so...

Such is why I will never become a business man. I like having honor and ethics.

I have honor and ethics - I just choose not to exercise them.

Compare this to the Walton family...they don't give sh!t.

This is a valid point.

For those who don't know "Walton family" = Wal*Mart

They buy out businesses, undercut competitors, etc like Microsoft.

Worse, while Microsoft makes their money in the business world, Wal*Mart's practices involve driving "ma and pop shops" out of business in small towns across the nation. More small businesses have closed as a result of a Wal*Mart moving in....at the same time as Microsoft is offering all kinds of financing breaks on their software to small business and educational users.

While Microsoft got to the top by being ruthless with other big business, Wal*Mart got to the top by being ruthless to small and family businesses. And Gates gives like made back to charities, the Waltons don't give jack sh*t. (Well, alright, the entire family - all five of them - HAVE given $701 million to educational charities.....total......since 1998.)

The Walton family gives jobs to thousands of Chinese. Wal-Mart alone is the 5th largest importers of Chinese products. And Wal-mart stores offer jobs to those Americans who had lost good paying jobs to some other countries <cough>China</cough>. With so many people being pay less than what they used to, now they go to Wal-Mart 🙂
