No Magnetic Shielding in speakers

I was wondering if you guys knew if non-magnetically shielded speakers can damage a computer that is right next to it.

I have a large bookshelf speaker just inches away from the location were I want to put my HTPC. Is there danger to my computer? Will my Harddrives get fubar'd?

ribbon13 has one of these next to his computer with no problems.

The magnetic field would have to be immense to affect the harddrives.

As said, Magnetic Interference would have to be pretty powerful to damage an HDD.

Not sure about other components though.

It's your call, but I would not recommend non-shielded speakers right next to the computer. It could still affect other sensitive components in your system over time. Luckily, magnetic fields deteriorate quickly (square of the distance). Try placing the speakers at least a foot away. If you are talking about a subwoofer (powerful magnetic field when volume is high), it shouldn't be any where near anything electronic (at least a few feet away).

I think that it can mess up your monitor, so you might want to put some distance between the speakers and monitor.

I have LCDs, and the speakers are 3' away from them.

Winter - they are bookshelf speakers. I dont have a subwoofer yet.

3 inches from your computer case too? Can you move them a bit further?

As I mentioned, Tiamat, it's up to you. Bookshelf speakers have much smaller magnets but still, if shielding isn't that critical, why are most speakers shielded?

Just remember that every inch of separation counts.

Zero effectivenes on a computer. You'll need something like a 500 ton magnet or something to screw up your computer.

More concering is the vibration caused by the speakers. My pc sits on the floor between all of this. I suggest taking a couple racket balls, cutting them in half, and placing them under the puter to absorb some of the vibration.
