No longer need laptop recommendations!! - ~$1000 and ~$650

**Bought one for this already, still need the other one, kind of soon**
I'm just now checking out Dell's site; their Inspiron 5100 looks good; customized it down to $1,139, which is acceptable, considering it does more than what I want.🙂
Some things I do want, and don't want:
No Intel "Extreme" graphics. I've heard good things about the mobile Radeon 7500.
512MB of RAM
1GHz + processor
DVD/CD-RW combo drive
USB 2.0
Video-out (RCA or S-video)
PS/2 port would be nice too

**Bought this one too now, also on the forums**
That'll be mine; my sister is looking for one. What should work for her:
P3 1GHz or around there
256MB RAM, maybe 384
DVD/CD-RW
USB 2.0 (or a PCMCIA slot that'll accept a USB adaptor card)
maybe video out
3d graphics are not critical here

If the coupon 10% off on the Hewlett Compaqard 4400/2100 series notebooks is still valid, you can get a very nice Barton XP2400+ notebook for her for under 700, then buy some 256 2100 Sodimm to upgrade to 384.

the radeon 7500 cards are fairly good, dont expect much performance out of them, but they can slowly play bf1942 if you lower the settings down a bit. everything else they run fine!

I haven't used HP or compaq notebooks, so I can't really comment on thier reliability. (I own an IBM t40)

i have the compaq 2175, exact same specs as you listed, 3d isnt spectucular, but runs some stuff, i picked mine up for 1k$ about 2 months back, i'd say its a good buy, plenty fast, and havent had any problems with it whatsoever.

I tried a link there, for a Presario 2100Z, and tried to customize it. That was about 2 hours ago, but the site says:
We're sorry for the inconvenience...
We are unable to process your request to customize one of our pcs. We expect to be up and running promptly, so check back soon!

If you're interested, may we recommend our ready-to-ship model pcs? Simply click on desktops or notebooks in the top navigation bar, find the pc series you're looking for, and select the ready-to-ship button to see our line of pre-built pcs ready for delivery when you need it.

Still is that way as I'm posting this message. Actual error, or just a way of "encouraging" ready-built ones?

Ah, I think I see the error. The system includes 128MB of RAM. The options for RAM under the customize section BEGIN with "256MB [+$175]". If you try to go to the next page with none of them selected, you get an error. Pick one, incurring the $175 "penalty," and it lets you proceed. That's either underhanded, or else just really sloppy web design.
Let's see if there are any Dell deals instead...

Edit: I'm checking their other laptops too. It seems that memory is considered an "option" for them - choosing the "option" of 128MB of RAM (as opposed to no RAM, it appears), costs $100. :Q
