I often bring my laptop over to my girlfriends apartment to do homework etc. I'm not about stealing someone elses AP signal, but she hasn't gotten her router in the mail yet so until then I'm not feeling bad about hijacking a signal that someone forgot to password. There is one AP which is close enough to catch, that I used to be able to get *barely*.
As of the other day I can't get any signal from the AP anymore at all. I can see one other AP (encrypted). The fact I lost the signal isn't annoying, but she still gets a fine signal on her laptop (like she always has), and can actually see about 8 other APs.
I'm aware my WNIC might not be amazing, but considering its standard B/G, I'm honestly very suprised it could be *that much* worse.
I've tried switching from channel 6 to both 1 and 11 (yes, they left the router unlocked, but come on this was for experimentation), but neither helped in any way.
The point of this post isn't so I can be happy with wireless internet, I'm fine with plugging into the wall, as I am right now. However, I'm honestly very curious as to why mine would be so much worse.
I'm using a Dell Mini-PCI Truemobile 1300 WNIC. I have the newest drivers in Windows, released yesterday I believe. And I'm in Ubuntu right now.
Any comments are helpful; but if you are going to post just to rant at me for being a packet thief, please don't post, let the karma have me long and slow.
Thanks!
