No longer able to write to CD'S

I have a home built system with a NEC 3550-A DVD/CD. I run XP Pro w/SP2. For some reason I can no longer send data to my CD drive and write CD's. It will still read and play movies.

Can someone give me some guidance on how to repair it. I am sure it's software related and not a problem with the drive.
Thanks in advance

I had this happen to me, and sadly, my solution was to just rip a burner out of an old parts machine and run it in tandem with the "broken" drive (still burns dvd's...even DL's)

odd.
the drive is flaky. if a firmware fixes it, the drive should have never burned a cd before the flash upgrade.
expect it to die again i bet.
always try such a drive in another pc to verify that its working or not. in my experience burners lose burning ability before reading ability.
