According to IGN's Gerry Block, the company has had direct information that Nintendo will not allow the licensing of any bat like attachments for the Wiimote such as a lightsaber due to safety concerns. So therefore, Lucas Arts will not be able to release its own Official lightsaber add-on for the forthcoming Star Wars game.

I blame all you kids.

Would you really want a full fledged lightsaber anyway? Yes, it would be cool, but it seems like it you would need a lot of space to use it. I don't see what's wrong with just having the "handle." If Lucas Arts released lightsaber handles not much bigger than the Wiimote, people would still buy them.

Sadly, a LOT of people. This is stupid, though. I could not care less about Star Wars and fake light sabers, but let parents do the parenting. Just make the freaking console and shut up, Nintendo.

I want a full fledged lightsaber that I can resize to fit in accordance with the size of my play area. I want it to be able to extend to about 3-4 feet and I want to be able to reduce the size to as short and one foot.

I also agree with this. If I can't teach my kids how to handle this responsibly then why the hell am I allowed to buy plastic swords and lightsabers from Toys R Us? It's the same damn thing.

unfortunately, nintendo has to balance the fact people are stupid and bad press. that whole straps debacle when the wii first came out... most of the time it was pure stupidity. I sat there for 5 minutes throwing my wii remote at the couch w/ the wrist strap attached to try and snap it. never happened.

Ya I know. :(

Video games are in the media spotlight right now which is why this is an issue. It used to be music, then it was movies, and now it is video games. Time will resolve this issue on its own.

Nintendo just doesn't want to have to deal with all the stories about how dangerous it's console is when some kid accidentally skewers his sister while playing. It won't be Lucasarts getting the bad press it'll be Nintendo and their dangerous console.

You'll just end up cutting your hand off. Or the hand of your long-lost son. Or both.

When does anyone need Nintendo's approval to make a toy light saber that you can put a wiimote in anyway?

There are already boat loads of toys for the wiimote (guns, bats, tennis rackets etc) and I doubt Nintendo said okay to all of them.

Yea, I don't see how Nintendo's refusal to approve it will stop it from being made (although Lucasarts will probably respect Nintendo's wishes, I'm sure a smaller company will be glad to cash in on the opportunity.)

Still, I would MUCH prefer to wield just a handle than to have an actual blade attachment. Wouldn't the "blade" of a lightsaber be weightless, in theory? The weight of a blade attachment would actually make it less realistic.

it doesn't really matter cause it's not going to map your movement 1:1 anyways.

I'm sorry, but I had to laugh at this statement since it was describing a light saber. :D

Considering the astonishingly high amount of children, retards, and retarded children who managed to break something by throwing Wiimotes and what have you, I can't say I'm shocked Nintendo's airing on the side of caution.

The Nintendo lawyers don't want to back it. If the Nintendo name is on it, then Nintendo would be responsible when it flies off of the Wii remote and causes damage. Think like a lawyer and you'll understand.
