I really don't know how I feel about this. It's not like the President actually writes a letter anyways.

I voted yes...only because I think it's kinda unnecessary to have a policy about it.

However, if the prez is personally spending time slots writing condolence letters, there are probably enough families where their husbands/sons/brothers died performing acts of bravery and heroism to fill them. Doesn't make the story, hardship and general problems of stigma associated with PTSD any less tragic though.

Dear So and So:

Maybe if you did a better job raising your child / wasn't such an awful spouse they wouldn't have killed themself.

Your right. Subjecting young adults to the horrors of combat stress, killing another human being, being away from family and friends, and constantly in danger couldn't possibly contribute more then a "poor upbringing."

People kill themselves all the time. Makes it hard to believe that the horrors of combat is the causative agent at work here.

Being away from your loved ones for 14 months is bad enough. I don't know anyone that comes back and is completely normal.

Friend,

I share your grief over the lost of a loved one. Yes he could.

Wouldn't know, never had the misfortune to experience
those horrors and I'm betting your candy ass hasn't either.

This. I know a few people (including my ex and bro in law) - no one is the same person when they return. I don't care how mentally strong you are...you can't ever get over what you've seen or done over there. Maybe in time the memories fade a bit (my best friend was in Desert Storm and saw his best friend get shot in the neck and bleed to death right in front of him, he's "normal" now) but within the immediate timeframe, a person is bound to not be the same.

Normally suicide's a selfish thing. These days, I'm not so sure, some of those coming back from "the shit" are delayed casualties of war. If the prez won't honor them, fuck it, I will.

I don't know how I feel about this. I know I have 3 cousins who served in Vietnam and not one of them is "right". War does something to some of those folks minds and I don't think we will ever truly understand the full effects. I would assume suicide would be rationalized as being a coward which is why there is a policy in place. I kind of think that maybe each case should be reviewed. And to the poster who wrote that the President does not actually write the letter is besides the point. In the lost of a loved one to war anything that would honor their service would go a long way to healing the emotional wounds. I remember as little boy I went to a couple of funerals of guys who died in Vietnam, sad indeed. Even though I was 4-5 years old I still can remember quite clearly those days.

"And kind old King George
Sent Mother a note
When he heard that father was gone.
It was, I recall,
In the form of a scroll,
With gold leaf and all.
And I found it one day
In a drawer of old photographs, hidden away.
And my eyes still grow damp to remember
His Majesty signed
With his own rubber stamp."

I'm not in position to answer this question - neither does the majority of the general public.

I make no pretensions on being experienced or knowledgeable about being in combat. I do have experience with suicide and I make comments based on that experience.

I voted no. It could be too personal of an issue and too easy to say the wrong thing.

The president doesn't owe anyone anything. I can't believe how entitled those families feel. Obama should be worried about other things, like how to cut spending.

The president has MUCH better things to do with his time than write letters to psychos' families.

This is a policy? Really? It's a policy??

K the poll and OP don't even mention that it's for military families, but that doesn't change my answer.

Holy crap how stupid can you be. Why in the heck would the President write a letter to some schmuck's family who puts a bullet into his brain.

This is just another typical OT response from someone to lazy or stupid probably both to read a full post or watch a 3 minute video. You and 3/4's of the braindead people that post here suffer from ADD. I fucking swear you people do.

People here cannot read past 3 sentences and want cliffs.

Well here is your cliff you fuckin retard
