No Juice - Help Needed

I tried to boot my PC last night and got nothing. I tried a new power cord and nothing. It's not the outlet or the surge protector because other things on the surge run fine.

So I popped the case and think I caught a wiff of ozone. My mobo (Soyo 6VBA133) has a pilot light to indicate that it is getting power, so I plugged the rig back in and no light comes on.

I'm not sure if it's the power supply or the motherboard. Other than swapping new parts in and out, does anyone know of a way to check this? I appreciate any advice.

does the fan on your power supply start up? if you've got any other fans in your case, do they start? if not, i'd guess your motherboard is blown.

does your power suply have a switch on the back, Not the 110-200 swtich but a little rocker swith, it should be black and have a dash and a circle on it flip it and see if that wroks.

No fans run at all. It runs as if it isn't plugged in at all. Flipping the switch in the back yielded no results. Sound like a mobo?

try borrowing a friends power supply and see it works. you might've blown yours out or something.

majewski9, I appreciate the input, but can you tell me how you know that for sure? I would like for it to be a PSU, since I just found out that my mobo is discontinued. Let me know why you think it's the PSU.

Disconnect the power supply from everything, and short its green wire (pin 14) to a black wire (pin 13 or 15), either directly or through a 200-500 ohm resistor (latter is safer if you connect the wrong wires). If the fan doesn't run when you do this, suspect a bad power supply. Otherwise check for shorts between the motherboard and case, usually at the mounting holes and also at any unsupported corners (no mounting post within 3" of corner - place plastic or rubber bumper under such corners to prevent shorts).

If the motherboard's onboard CPU voltage regulator doesn't work it won't be able to turn on the power supply. Usually these fail from an overheated and shorted electrolytic capacitor (upright cylinder) or shorted transistor or diode (bad capacitor ruins these).
