No Joy w NewEgg Sapphire 8500LE refurb, RMA?

I bought a refurb Sapphire 8500LE from Newegg, and I have been fussing with it with little success for most of the last week.

W98se, 256 MB ram, 160 GB raid. Software installed OK, 2d fine, but only game I tried Counter Strike was grainy with low frame rates. This is a system I just built, its not real stable and nothing else is installed.

This is my daily use PC, and for two days a I tried all I could think of, but never even got ATi driver installed. Screen would freeze with weird repeating pattern, almost like sync was wrong, but it was OK, the instant Windows started to open (ie the W98 screen goes to desktop).

This is sons daily use PC, P4 1700 running XP pro, couldn't get past windows detecting new hardware, immediately rebooted.

Should I just RMA this card or is there something I could do to test it?

BTW I read all the ATi notes etc. , deleted old drivers, ran driver cleaner, etc. etc.

It's a refurb return it. Maybe it was messed up when the original owner returned it.

Its going to get ONE more chance since I am building another PC tomorrow, a ECS k7vta3, but thats all of my time I am going to waste.
