No iPhone 5 at WWDC this year possibly

By now you've seen the announcement for WWDC 2011 (coming June 6th), but what you may not have heard yet is that this one is going to be a little different than some of the dev cons from years past. Namely, unlike the events in 2008 through 2010, you won't see the announcement of a new iPhone (or iPad... or anything else hardware related). We're hearing the same kind of chatter from sources that solid writers like Jim Dalyrmple of The Loop and All Thing D's John Paczkowski have been reporting today -- that this WWDC is going to be all about the future of iOS and OS X.

Of course if that pans out, all eyes are going to be on the company's Fall event, which seems like an increasingly likely place to launch a new phone -- especially considering the fact that the iPod's place in Apple's lineup has become diminished thanks to the success of its mobile devices. The timing also sets Apple up nicely for a brisk season of holiday phone purchases. As for the iPad, Daring Fireball's John Gruber speculated that we might see some kind of new model at this year's Fall event, and while that seems highly unlikely to us given the recent launch of the iPad 2, a new tablet would make a perfect companion to that new phone. What September holds is pure speculation right now, but for the time being, it looks like you can just get comfortable with your iPhone 4.

WOW, no new iPhone coming out this June. That's crazy as it's been basically an annual event and everyone has gotten used to it coming out at the same time. It could mean that they're focusing on iOS and OSX and finally going to add some meaningful changes to iOS other than multitasking which it seriously needs but no new iPhone until possibly fall seems too long without a new phone.

that is kinda weak. I am a iphone fanboy but they should come out with something better than the 4. I feel like the new android phones coming out on verizon are pretty amazing. I was expecting to see a marginally better Iphone. something like a 4GS. You never know though, maybe apple will bring something amazing to its software.

3GS is still pretty good. I have finally decided to upgrade my iPhone original.

This doesn't mean iPhone 5 isn't coming... Just that it's not coming at WWDC.

A couple months won't matter too much.

I hope the next iPhone has a kickstand. By far the most important part of any new phone is the kickstand.

EDIT: Back on subject, I doubt Apple will go 1.5+ years without releasing a new model. If not @ WWDC, I can guarantee we will see a new iphone released by the holiday season.

I'm disappointed but since we have to wait longer for the 5, I hope it would get some kickass improvement.
Just give me a 4" screen.

I'd be willing to bet they're waiting on a chipset for 4G on Verizon that doesn't suck battery life like there's no tomorrow.

I love my 4G ThunderBolt, but the giant accessory battery sucks. Same with the EVO.

I wonder if they will even come out with one this year at all. I guess 4G really did make them rethink some things. What do you think would happen to profits of the iPhone without having a new one technically for 2 years since the last one? By the time the next iPhone would come out in 2012, we would probably have all these low power quad core chips, better graphics, faster & more memory, and more 4G phones. If Apple wants to really keep up, they need to deliver at least once every year.

my friend has a total of 4 batteries for his EVO and still runs out of juice constantly.

Well, this is not surprising.

Apple was rumored to be rolling out a "Fall surprise" as far back as Feb this year. If the iPhone 5 doesn't come in June, guess when?

im wager this to be true. early adopters to 4g got shafted on bat life, apple might be the first one to get around this and people will sack ride them like there is no tomorrow

Wow that sucks. I'm guessing that Apple dropped a lot of money into the iPhone4 design and probably still want to use it in their next gen iPhone. Maybe the new A5 chip, but the same form factor.

I have a feeling if they just pretty much give it a dual core and keep everything else the same, there is probably no reason to upgrade from the current iPhone 4. People probably aren't going to be happy that it's not 4G.

This.

As they've refined production, they can roll out new devices closer to Christmas and pull off massive sales, they can generate the lines and free publicity, milk the "sold out cuz it's so popular" for a few weeks, do an international roll out, then ramp up production for the Christmas run.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the iPad release creep closer to Christmas and to get away from the complaint of "I just got a new XXX for Christmas and it's already outdated?"

I guess the killer will be if it has 4G or not. If it has 4G, it probably will not get as many glowing reviews. By Christmas time, every network will be full of 4G phones, and someone like Apple comes out with something that will be popular as hell, but no 4G, would become a problem, I'd think.

The CEO of VZ has hinted at a 4G Apple device, wether he's talking about the next gen iPhone or a notebook is the big question. I think a 4G notebook is a given this year BTW...

IMHO, Apple needs to launch a phone with 4G speed & the simultaneous data/voice capability this year, and VZ's 4G network is important to the success of the VZ iPhone, when people talk about the VZ iPhone one of the first things I hear is the "it won't surf the web when I'm calling someone." When you're trying to give someone directions etc, it's a big deal.

on the 4g topic has AT&T rolled it out yet? i cant rmemeber

AT&T has the worst 4G so far, not a true LTE network, but faster than 3G, and the Atirix is sort of a mess

http://www.gottabemobile.com/2011/03/28/motorola-atrix-4g-update-available-no-huspa-support-yet/

They just rolled out an update & screwed up the rooting method and still no 4G... People are getting a bit worked up over it too, typical AT&T "Screw the customers, we know what's best, even though we're lying to them"

If they can't get something out the door this year that has 4G, they are going to have to play some crazy catch up with Android.

All rumors at this point, but a lot of sources with good track records are talking about it so it's definitely possible. iOS already has multitasking, although just not in the same way as Android. In my opinion it needs a new notification system more than anything else, but to each his own.

It's possible that the delay is due to the earthquake/tsunami that hit Japan. It may have put critical component manufacturers offline for long enough that the iPhone would need to be delayed in order to have sufficient inventory to meet demand at launch. Of course it could be any number of different reasons such as delays in iOS 5 or getting hardware bugs, such as a better antenna, worked out. To paraphrase Miyamoto: A delayed product is eventually good, a bad product is bad forever.
