No IP address

I have a friend who is having problems with his NIC. He has DSL and is connected to a router that 2 other computers are connected to. These other 2 computers both work and detect IP addresses, but this one doesn?t.

Instead of getting the normal 169 return when it doesn?t find a DHCP network, it sits at 0.0.0.0 constantly, and never stops looking for a network. I found this odd and had never seen or heard of it before. I also switched ports with a working computer and it did the same thing.

Once I find a spare NIC and have a chance to test it out I will know more, but in the meantime I was wondering if anyone else has had a similar issue, or has heard of this before.

Thanks for your help!

n General, you can debug the Network Settings of a computer by following these steps.

Step One. Check the Network parameters in the Computer's Device Manager. Make sure that the Network Card drivers are installed correctly; i.e. there is No IRQ conflict, and No Ghost installation. http://www.ezlan.net/faq#ghost

Step Two. Verify Basic network setting in the OS: http://www.ezlan.net/Installing#verify If the above two Steps indicates that every thing looks good but functionally it does not work.

Step Three. Check (and repair if necessary) the Socket Layers, Winsock, and or refresh the TCP/IP Stack. http://www.ezlan.net/clean#refreshnet

If need to Reinstall the Network Settings; Log to this page, it have a lot of links to instructions for Windows Network Installation - http://www.ezlan.net/Installing.html

I did do all the basic troubleshooting, and did and uninstall/reinstall the device after refreshing/repairing/flushing everything and it was still a no go. There is also a substantial lag or lockup right after the computer boots right before the device begins to search for an IP address... as in taskbar is locked up and network places is inaccessible.

I am still leaning towards the idea of the NIC being partially fried. The computer is an eMachines an about 5yrs old with perhaps one reformat since then - so not in the best software or hardware condition.

Thanks for the info and links Jack!

Uh,

Start with a network trace.

The DORA processes in DHCP is one of the simplest things to follow in a trace.

Figure out what is really happening then you can start trouble shooting it.

First check if its functioning. Can this pc talk to other pcs on the network? If it does, the problem is in the configuration - check Jack's suggestions. If it does not, unplug and re-install, with correct drivers. Still no go - dont fight this - get a new nic - preferably Linky or 3com.

If you have only TCP/IP network protocol installed, you will need to also install Netbuei protocol to test the network connection.
