A buddy of mine has an laptop that will not connect to the internet through a
wireless router. It see's the router and says it is connected but when you open
IE or Firefox it's a no go. Where should I be looking for the problem ?
We have tried 2 different routers with the same results. It used to connect
but then suddenly stopped about a month ago. I took a look at it and can't
figure out what got screwed up.

What are the settings on the router for authentication? Has this changed recently. You could temporarily turn off the security settings to see if it connects without any security settings. If it does then setup WPA or WPA2, set a key and delete any profiles that exist on the laptop for the wireless network. Then try to connect again and you should be prompted for a access key.

No WPA or WEP setup. Unsecured. It see's a ton of wireless signals, including the routers
I've tried. It connected to both of them but it couldn't access the internet. I'm thinking it
is something in windows, not the routers I have tried. Where do you think I should start
looking ? Funny thing is it has connected to my router here at my house before without any problem. Do you think I should try putting a switch in between the cable modem and the
router just to see if it makes any difference ?

While the laptop says that it is connected to a wireless router, open a Command Prompt (Click Start>Run, then type CMD and click OK) and type IPCONFIG. Copy the results here. Or, if you don't want to copy the whole thing, post the what it says for IP address and default gateway.

This is likely the problem. Try changing the channel on the router to 1,6,11 and see which one works best.

I took my laptop over and had no problem connecting to the internet through the router.
Now, where should I start looking in windows for the problem with his laptop ? His is running
XP Home SP 2. Anyone ????

(Remember, the problem is the laptop not the router)
