No Internet traffic going anywhere from my computer

I haven't seen this before. I opened up a browser window yesterday and it didn't go to my homepage. Typing an address or clicking a bookmark doesn't go anywhere. It doesn't look like it is trying. It just instantly says done and leaves a blank screen. I can ping my router and internet sites. It seems like any other kind of traffic though is not going anywhere. I don't have windows firewall or any software firewall. It was working fine last time I used it.

Posting from a second computer on the same network. Everything is fine on this one. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions on what to look at?

Check to make sure there aren't any conflicts or errors in both your hardware profile and your network protocols. Does rebooting work or change anything?

ping 4.2.2.4

and open the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts in notepad. It should look exactly like:
Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost

4 for 4 on the reply from 4.2.2.4

What is that?

The hosts file is fine. That was one thing that I did think to check.

I think it's one of verizon's dns servers. Doesn't sound like a DNS problem if you page says done. Have you tried another browser? Check your event viewer for any clues.

Also, I would reset/repair your TCP/IP stack. Next I would power cycle my hardware.

Good luck

In General you can debug the Network Setting of the computer following these steps.

Step One. Check the Network parameters in the Computer?s Device Manager. Make sure that the drivers are installed correctly; there is No IRQ conflict, and No Ghost installation. http://www.ezlan.net/faq#ghost

Step Two.Verify Basic network setting in the OS: http://www.ezlan.net/Installing#verify
If the above two Steps indicates that every thing looks good but functionally it does not work.

Step Three. Check (and repair if necessary) the Socket Layers, Winsock, and or refresh the TCP/IP Stack. http://www.ezlan.net/clean#refreshnet

If need to Reinstall; Log to this page it have a lot of links to instructions to Windows Network Settings, and Sharing: http://www.ezlan.net/Installing.html.

I didn't notice that you said you could ping internet sites, rather I thought you couldn't. But if you can ping sites, then you shouldn't have a problem with your TCP/IP stack. Rather, it seems more like a misconfiguration of IE or a spyware/adware take over attempt of the browser. The easiest alternative here would be to just use a different browser like Firefox or Opera 😉

IE7 is also available to download now. If you can ping out then there is no issue with your network settings or connectivity. Well, if you can ping by name anyway, which I assume is what your doing when you ping external sites. This is a browser issue. Perhaps IE problem itself or perhaps a hijack or other spyware problem. Have you run your antispyware/antivirus software?

Compromised computer. They got in through vnc. I gave vnc a better password and got rid of the offending program. I wonder what the a-hole was doing with my computer all week when I was away.

I should have mentioned in the original post. IE and Firefox had the same behavior. Thanks for the ideas though everyone.
