No internet on IE but works fine with Firefox, need windows updates...

I've checked network connections, TCP/IP, and tools/connections/lan settings and everything is as it should be. It seems that any programs that need updates like spybot, or windows update won't connect at all. On the otherhand, firefox works like a charm. It might be time for a reinstall of windows but I have hundreds of installed programs that i'd rather not install again.

Let me know any suggestions. Again I've checked everything that's standard for net connections and nothing looked out of place. But I will try anything over if suggested.

Thanks.

If applicable, check any firewall settings to make sure those programs are being allowed an outbound connection.

Sounds good.

Also, for windows updates, there's a very well made extension, IE Tab, that opens IE within a firefox tab, as the name kinda suggests 🙂 Or rather, it uses the IE rendering engine and things, so it'll allow you to use Windows Update from within firefox.

I'll try the IE tab. Hope this works. As for firewalls, I have nothing set up so that would not be it. As I mentioned, nothing looks out of the ordinary unless the registry or windows component got deleted but I'm fairly careful. This makes me regret not ghosting the drive when i was done installing things. Sigh... Thanks though guys. I'll try Firefox.

I'm assuming you get "page cannot be displayed" error in IE? Check your HOSTS file to make sure malware/virus didn't modifiy it. Might want to try to repair your Winsock, that's the cause of IE not connecting to a page 90% of the time.

Host File Info

LSP Fix for Winsock

Fixed link! DOH!
