I have just installed new internet at a newly rented place. And after the cable internet installed, I have trouble getting the connection to work in the way I wanted and I'm not really good at networking.
So the cable internet is connected to a Thompson modem which is bought from the internet service company and if I use an Ethernet cable to connect it directly from modem to a laptop, it works only on one single laptop, while other laptops at home doesn't get internet access at all. I think it's somehow because the laptop that's working is the laptop that is connected when the network is activated, so maybe the modem or the signal recognized the computer setting with the first available?!
When I tried connect the modem to my TP-Link router, there is no internet access as well. I tried cloning the MAC address of the working laptop to the router but it won't work what so ever and I really wish to fix my home's network asap.
Really appreciate it if anyone could offer some help!! :)

Make sure you are plugging the Ethernet cable from the cable modem to the WAN port on the router.
Make sure you aren't using PPPoE on the router.
Power off both cable modem and router.
Power on cable modem, then router.

this is sort of strange device it is called Mode but it provides Local IP.

I.e., there is some Routing system in it.

Try to assign to the WAN port of your Router a manual IP of 192.168.225.1 and connect it to the "modem".

And or connect the Output of the Modem to one of the TP-Link regular port and configure it this way.

Is it a modem or Emta [phone and internet]

In either case hook up the router and leave it unpowered.
Reset the modem [if its an emta you need a pen or paper clip and find the reset button on the back due to a battery back up for the phone, if its a modem just pull the power plug, PS thompson/RCA sucks, next time you have a service call or are in the cable store, ask for a different one]

Power up the router, log in tot he router and make sure you have it configured correctly, everything should be dynamic or DHCP.

The modem learns the MAC address fo the first device it connects to in this case your laptop and will not talk to another mac unless the memory is cleared, in some cases mac cloning followed by a reset can make things work, but its really a hack job and not a correct fix for the issue, as well as the reset woudl have fixed everything without it.

I think mine is just a modem, not emta.
And I've tried resetting the modem and the router for thousands times but nothing is working. It's kinda like the resetting doesn't really reset anything as the modem still recognize only the first computer connected.
