No internet access in W98 after viruses

Hello all,

I'm having problems getting a client back on her feet after some virus problems. I think the virus wiped out some of the system files needed for internet access. After getting the system clean of the virus, I tried the internet.

The problem is that I just couldn't get anywhere in IE. I couldn't get to the router or any web pages. The strange thing is that I can ping the router and IP addresses on the internet fine. They won't load in IE, though. Ipconfig shows that I'm pulling an IP address from the router. I have the right servers in the DNS area. I don't, however, have host and domain set to anything. What should these be set to? Anyway, I've tried it with DNS disabled, too. It still doesn't work.

I've reinstalled both Win 98 and IE6. The system operates on a wireless link

I'm really flat out of ideas here. What else could be wrong with this thing?

Thanks,
Swan

You might try checking the hosts file. I think there was a virus a while back that made entries that could cause problems.

Go into the protocol crap were you set up networking addresses and such inside the control panel.

Uninstall everything reinstall everything. TCP/IP stack, your ethernet drivers... so on a so forth.

Also clear the cache and history. Go into uninstall/reinstall programs and act like your going to remove IE, it will ask you if you want to repair it or something like that. Go ahead and repair it.

Sometimes it's easier just to go to www.microsoft.com and download the latest version of IE and install it from their, it pretty much does the same thing.

Make sure that they have their windows98 disk also.

Look, the truth is that Windows 98 just realy, realy sucks. It's truly a crappy operating system. Uninstalling and reinstalling this stuff should help out , but also on a system that is already screwed up from viruses or botched de-frags this can send a system over the edge. Make them back up first.

If they are a client you don't want to do this and have them loose their information on the next boot-up.

Mostly what I know deals with DUN stuff, but you can go ahead and reinstall uninstall that stuff, too. Could help.
