I purchased and downloaded Windows 8, but I don't get a "install by creating media" option. I can't figure out what went wrong. All I get is "Install now" and "Install later from desktop", no "Install from media".
Wow. I'm really stupid I guess. Yes, I'm trying to get this from XP. I went ahead and installed the upgrade (because it didn't give me option to create media) and now I discover that it installed a 32-bit OS. I thought Windows 8 Pro would be a full 64-bit OS. Or is that another limitation of going from XP? Anyway, I feel really ripped off right now. I probably just wasted $40.
Thanks for those links. I'll look into doing that work around.
You can't upgrade from a 32-bit OS to a 64-bit OS, it was never possible. You were not ripped off. Windows "Upgrade Assistant" detects what OS you are running, if you are running 32-bit, it will automatically download 32-bit Windows 8. If you are running a 64-bit os, it will download Windows 8 64-bit.
The serial numbers for 32/64bit are the same. So you don't have to worry about that. You just have to get the right installer/ISO.
So how do you go from 32-bit to 64-bit if the "upgrade advisor" automatically gives you 32-bit since you are running 32-bit?
A. buy the 64-bit Windows 8 DVD (waste of money).
B. install 64-bit Windows 7 from the links above as a clean install and download the installer again to get 64-bit Windows 8.
C. if you have another comuputer that has a 64-bit OS installed, download the installer again (link in your e-mail I assume), it will detect the 64-bit OS and download 64-bit Windows 8, then make it into a DVD/USB drive. Take the DVD/USB to your PC and install.
Yes, it is a hassle.
Thanks. That's very helpful info. I'm in the process of option "B" above.
I wiped the drive and did a clean install of 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium from the ISO downloaded from the links above. And I downloaded all the updates including SP1.
I have the eMail receipt from Microsoft from purchasing the Windows 8 upgrade which includes my product key and a link to download Windows 8. So hopefully if I download it from within this Windows 7 64-bit installation I'll get the 64-bit Windows 8 and will be able to burn an installer disk.
Off-topic question... are the serial numbers the same for 32/64-bit versions of XP as well? If so, is there a way to create a 64-bit XP install disk using my 32-bit license? Maybe using nLite? The serial numbers for 32/64bit are the same.
Negative. Windows XP 64bit is an entirely different OS; it's basically a workstation version of Windows Server 2003.Off-topic question... are the serial numbers the same for 32/64-bit versions of XP as well?
