Just heard it from Shuttle Launch Control.

Do the fuel tanks on the shuttle use liquid fuel or solid fuel?

short answer: no, that's kind of the point of solid fuel rockets

long answer: the stuff must surely have some expiration date on it, but if it's at all like the rocket fuel used in ICBMs, that years or decades

Source? I think its about half that.
 
I wish I knew someone who would be interested in going to see the launch. I wouldn't mind the 3 hour (each way) drive if I had someone with which to do it.
