RX 480 has three DisplayPort 1.3/1.4 HDR outputs, so theoretically it should be capable of running 3x displays @ 5K.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DisplayPort#1.4

Pending verification with reviews, I don't see why it wouldn't work for non-gaming purposes. Each DP port should be able to hit 5K @ 60 Hz without DSC, and higher if your monitor supports DSC (e.g. 8K @ 60Hz 10bpp or 4K @ 120Hz 10bpp+HDR).

yes, but for that you need a DP1.3 capable monitor, which are none at the moment, so he still will need X cards with a total of 6 Displayport 1.2 connections to drive that, some of the "midrange" cards now come with 3 DP 1.2 connectors so that might work if splitting one monitor to 2 cards is not a problem.

If you aren't gaming, wait for the 460 / 470. They will likely have the same output as 480 but for maybe as low as $99 (460 2gb).

If you aren't gaming, and just need something that can drive 3 Displayport 1.2 5K monitors, then one of the old Eyefinity cards from AMD can do that. Old stocks of the 7750s with 6 displayports are available for about $230 (the used price is the same as the old price, so no since in buying used).

Otherwise, you can wait for DP1.3 monitors and get by with a more average next-gen card with 3 displayports.

Why would you advocate for a $230 super old card instead of 460/470/480? :O

Because the OP stated that they were doing 5K monitors X3. If these are current-gen 5K monitors, then DisplayPort 1.2 is all he has available. DisplayPort 1.3 monitors do not exist yet. That means he will need 6 video outputs (2 video outputs for each monitor). They all must be DisplayPort because he's tieing them together with a monitor's built-in MST. He then further restricted choices by requiring only 1 card be used.

So with all that established, do you know of any current-gen 6 DP cards? Do you know of any upcoming 460/470/480 cards with 6 DP ports? I definitely don't. You have 4 choices for a 6 DP card that's is supported by AMD or NVIDIA:

AMD 7750 ($230)
AMD 7870 (twice as much money)
AMD W9100 (ludicrous money)
NVIDIA NVS 810 ($640)

Like I said in my very final line:

Otherwise, you can wait for DP1.3 monitors and get by with a more average next-gen card with 3 displayports.

Basically, if he wants to do 3, 5K Monitors, that are DisplayPort 1.2, and do it all off of 1 graphics card. He has no choice but to pay out.
