yo peeps,
maybe your expertise can help me out.
machine setup:
P3 550mhz, 128mb PC100 sdram, BE6-II, quantum fireball 12gig, Asus v3800 tnt2/ultra agp, sb16 sound.
Win2k installs without a glitch, but as soon as a game(quake, UT, serious sam..) is loaded either it crashes or freezes.
Made sure all the drivers are latest (nvidia, creative...).
Even playing movies or instense video crashes system...very wierd!!
any suggestions would be great!
thanks!

This is not a GH issue. Take it to the OS forum.

do you have the latest version of directx installed?

also, your sb16 sound might have something to do with it (its a pretty old card)

no, most games run perfect under 2k, especially quake 3,

check your direct X,
what drivers to you have for your TNT,
also do you have any of the Service Packs for 2k, fixes alot of bugs...

Most games run perfectly for me in win2k. Check out NT Compatible for a list of games that are known to work or to not work under NT4, win2k or winXP

I'm thinking your problems might come from that sound card.

I am not too sure on that either though, my Unlce has that soundcard and he plays most games fine, check out Creative for a driver, i know they have an updated one...

win2k is a good OS, but it sucks compared with games. Playing Counter-strike on it, destroyed it after a couple of months or so.

Whre do people come up with this stuff. Win2k is perfectly fine for 99% of games on the market today, and even a good portion of older games. So long as they dont run in DOS and need direct access to hardware (ie soundcard). I have no problems running all of my games under 2k or XP.

I agree with the fact that the soundcard might be the problem. Try plaing movies and/or games with the Soundacrd physically removed from the PC and see if it still crashes.

I've been playing CS and Team Fortress on Win2k for almost a year now. Could be a hardware problem?

Where DO these people come up with this stuff? I see this same bogus info on many gaming and hardware forums. I have been using win2k for a wide variety of games for over a year without a problem I have played over 40 titles writen within the last 4 years on it. the only ones i have had trouble with were titles known for their extreme bugginess.

Hi guys!
thanks for all the input, sbeen very helpful.
as per your comments:
* yes - direct X 8.1 latest release applied
* as for the TNT2 ultra drivers many were tested including: Asus's crappy drivers and nVidia's 23.11 latest (same effect - exactly)
* soundcard was installed using regular native W2K drivers

gonna go try updating creatives drivers and if that don't work will remove the card to see what happens!

thanks again everyone!!
