Upgraded my Vista SP2 test bed to 7 RC. Everything is AOK except any attempt to open a gadget or the sidebar gives an error message stating that "settings.ini is being used by another process. Close the other program then click retry, or click cancel to exit" It does not identify the other program, and I can't find settings.ini anywhere. What is this all about?

Try renaming the file to settings.old and then restarting.

Yeah - I would do that in a heartbeat if I could find the damn file. It doesn't bubble up on any search or manual prowling.

Thanks, Bsobel. The search for files function in Win7 is really not as good as previous versions.

Anyway - I will try that. I recloned the drive back to fully functioning Vista w/SP2. Will try again. :)

End of story. CHanging that filename did nothing. The problem waa doing an upgrade install from Vista Ultimate to RC Ultimate. Too many things wrong. Tried three times and all with the same result.

So, on the 4th try I did a clean install. No problems at all. Everything worked swimmingly. But - the system is useless until many apps and customizations are done - and doing that to a beta is not really useful.

So, we'll just play with Win 7 barebones and learn how it works. Then when the final version is released, we'll install it clean and then invest the 3-4 days of work to get everything up to snuff for work.
