No FTP after Service Pack 2

I recently installed XP SP2 and now I cannot use FTP. It connects fine, but shows an access denied message when I try to upload or modify files. It does this with several different servers, and only on my laptop immediately after I installed SP2.

Here is what I've done

Tried multiple programs.
Done all the windows firewall tricks
-opened port
-created exceptions for each program
-ran default
-disabled completely.

I have tried using passive and non passive. I still get the same error constantly.

Any ideas?

ok I don't know but you should say what error message you are getting.
The more descriptive you are the easier it is for people to help.

Error 550 Access Denied

its your firewall turn the built in firewall off it will work fine

Already done that. I've done the "usual" procedures for this, disabled, created exceptions, opened ports, etc. None of it works.

I've even reinstalled this steaming heap of an OS and still get the same results.

can you use other internet? Is it just FTP that you're having problems with?

Yes, everything else works except outlook cannot connect to an exchange server. (Outlook express however works fine).

I think the key might be to go to Control Panel > Internet Options > Advanced[/b] and uncheck Use Passive FTP (for firewall and DSL modem compatibility). After that, use IE to visit a FTP address and you may get a Windows Firewall prompt (assuming you are logged on with an Admin-class account privvy to those settings). Seems to be working for me.

Thank you for your help, but I've done this already. I'm now an expert on windows firewall 😀

If you're getting an error from the ftp server, its not your computer but a problem with the remote server.

It does this with multiple servers.
