I've read that WP8 doesn't come with any file manager but comes with USB storage - does this imply that I cannot access the photos that I take with my phone through my PC - i.e. move from phone to PC using USB?

No hands on experience personally, but it sounds like the phones show up in Windows as standard removable storage devices, if a micro-SD card is present it also shows up.

edit: and either Zune or the W8 Phone app should allow photo syncing. And if photos are uploaded to Skydrive automatically, they should be showing up in your Skydrive folder with no syncing or file transferring needed.

When I using the Surface in a Microsoft store the other day, I tested this by downloading a random installer file (x86 so it wouldn't work), I found the file by having to search for it, and from the Metro/Modern/whatever it's called interface I was unable to really do anything with the file, so I had to jump to desktop mode to manage it.

OP is talking about WP8, there is no desktop mode.

Woops, reading fail.

I guess you will have to wait for an app. Isn't WP8 basically RT without the desktop mode?

Do you have a source on that? I've never heard anything close to WP8 being RT without desktop mode... that'd be weird.

WP8 is using an NT kernel rather than the CE kernel, but I think that is as close as it gets to either Windows 8 x86 or Windows 8 RT. The user interface as well obviously.
