No file manager for Windows phone?

Is this true? I knew iOS didn't have one but figured Windows phone would. How is this possible? So iOS users have to use iTunes to transfer stuff. Windows phone users use Zune?

Yeah right now you use Zune, there are rumors there will be some kind of mass storage support in WP8 though.

I don't think that's a rumor. I'm fairly sure that's confirmed.

Maybe I'm confused, but if WP8 will have (usb?) mass storage support, does that mean the OS itself will have a user-accessible file manager? Or are you tied to a PC for managing you files?

I apologize for any ignorance, I haven't had a chance to use any Windows Phone OS since mobile 6.

As I recall, WP7 and WP7.5 do not allow access to the file system.

Well I think the confirmed part is that, unlike WP7, when you plug it into your computer you'll have access to a mass storage device that you can drag & drop files into (and don't need Zune to transfer media back and forth).

One would assume if that's true then there'd also be some file manager apps built for the phone that can access that storage area, but that remains to be seen as well.

For Windows Phone 7, there is actually a homebrew file manager. Your phone has to have some sort of unlock (developer not carrier) though. Although you can see the files, it was not designed for end users to access it.

Not sure how MS is planning to have users access the microsd card for Windows Phone 8.
