I understand their reasoning.
Still a demo would have been nice.

Bethesda Softworks' Pete Hines has said that there will be no demo for Fallout 3, according to a report on Eurogamer.

Hines explained that because Fallout 3 has been built as one thing, "there's no way to portion off a section and have it stand on its own without putting the whole game in the demo, which we're just not going to do."

He then went onto say that because of the open, free-roaming nature of the game, a demo would prohibitively limit the experience. "And it doesn't really capture the fun of a game like an Elder Scrolls or a Fallout, where you can go where you want and do what you want. So no demo, sorry."

This will no doubt disappoint those who were hoping to try the game before buying it because of reservations they have with the game's direction.

Fallout 3 is a post-apocalyptic role-playing game that is expected to hit retail shelves later this year. For more information about the game, please check out our preview of the game. And while we wait for the game?s release, discuss these developments in the forums.

I'm going to buy it with or without the demo. But Bethesda needs to understand that if they fuck this up they are not going to have the blind devotion they are so accustomed to. I'm not sure they understand that they are playing with their reputation now even more than when they release something like Oblivion.

I bitched about no Oblivion demo, but still ended up buying it + expansion packs. And I have no qualms about buying F3 on the day of release, no matter what early reviews say.

I won't pick it up until I see some reviews and public opinion, from fans of the original Fallout games only.

I don't see how they could make a demo for Fallout 3/Oblivion. Give you one town to play in and lock the gates?

Unless early reviews give this a 5/10, this will be a pre-order/release day purchase for me.

In Fallout 1 they made a little custom area to try out, they could do the same thing but I'm guessing they're just lazy and figure it will sell anyway because of the hype.

Yep, this is my feeling, too. Even though the Fallout games were pretty open-ended (2 much more so than 1), there was always a sense of urgency in the game so I never quite got that sandbox play feel that I get in Oblivion. Had a good time with Oblivion for a while, but the main quest just felt too unimportant and the side quests were never all that interesting. Deal breaker for me was probably the voice acting, though. The same two or three actors doing almost every NPC voice, and the acting was so bad it just made me cringe every time they opened their mouths.

I'm leery of the same thing with Fallout 3, so I've got two criteria that need to be settled before I even *think* of laying out cash for the game: Ron Perlman has to be the narrator, and the rest of the voice acting needs to be on par with the first two games. They screw that up, and some Bethesda dev gets a flaming bag of poop on their doorstep.
