no-excuse absentee voting in GA going to be repealed

In more election rigging news, the GOP in GA are basically forcing everyone to physically go to the polls. 2022 (and beyond) is in deep trouble for the Dems if these sorts of bills keep getting passed. The GOP is about as shitty as they come.

Maybe we just need a running thread of "How the GOP is killing voting rights and regulations"?

Under SB 241, voters would need to be 65 years old or older, absent from their precinct, observing a religious holiday, be required to provide constant care for someone with a physical disability, or required to work “for the protection of the health, life, or safety of the public during the entire time the polls are open,” or be an overseas or military voter to qualify for an absentee ballot. The bill aims to undo a 2005 Republican-backed law allowing no-excuse absentee voting.

The bill comes as Georgia has become ground zero for election law changes in the wake of the 2020 election. Republicans in the state, citing baseless allegations of voter fraud pushed by former President Donald Trump and other GOP officials, have moved to roll back access to mail-in voting and early voting.

This is where the Biden admin. and the Dems in Congress need to step in and make sure that "Free and Fair Elections" as guaranteed by our laws are indeed what it says it is and strictly enforced. Otherwise we will surely have Republican minority party rule over us for as long as they can take it.

GOP also wants to make it a crime to offer a cup of water to someone waiting in a long line (caused by their closing voting sites) to vote.
Any remaining doubts that the Republican party needs to be destroyed for America to survive?

"The bill aims to undo a 2005 Republican-backed law allowing no-excuse absentee voting."

Republicans enacted the no-excuse absentee voting 15 years ago and it was fine up until now. Hmm... I wonder what could have changed? ;)

I'm surprised they didn't go one further and claim that pencils are a "gift" and all voters must supply their own pencils. "Supply pencils?! ... That's Socialism!

The question really ought to be “Why not have enough polling places that there won’t be long lines?” Because seriously, the situation is truly fucked up if people are waiting long enough in a line that they’d care whether there was water available or not.

The answer would be the same, of course - the Republicans want fewer people to vote, because they do better in elections with lower turnout. Anything to avoid hearing the voice of the people.

And pack SCOTUS to uphold it. Last chance for US Democracy. Next step is Jim Crow or another Civil War.

This is where we are at. Joe Biden definitely has the justification now to pack the high court through expansion from nine justices to twelve or even sixteen. He needs to do this if at all possible. Republicans are attacking our voting rights and they don’t give a damn what anyone thinks, so why should Democrats feel shy about heading off republican efforts? Most if not all of the new state laws attacking rights to vote will eventually be challenged and end up at the Supreme Court. When that happens we must have a liberal majority in place on the high court. Joe Biden has no time for hesitation, Joe must begin the process now and damn with what republicans think. This is not politics as usual, this is a fight to the death. Republicans can pretend outrage and play their “we told you so” games about Biden stacking the court but who cares? The republicans started this assault on democracy and Democrats must end it.

While neither of these are Georgia, does anybody see a conflict here?

The problem is that the only people that will see it are people who A) pay attention to politics, and B) get information from sources outside of the conservative bubble.

The current SCOTUS will do nothing to prevent these measures from going into effect in my opinion based on Shelby. The only option for a different outcome would involve court packing which appears to be off the table currently.

Iowa governor signs controversial law shortening early and Election Day voting
Republican Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds on Monday signed into law a controversial bill aimed at limiting voting and making it harder for voters to return absentee ballots,
"It's our duty and responsibility to protect the integrity of every election. All of these additional steps promote more transparency and accountability, giving Iowans even greater confidence to cast their ballot" Reynolds said in a statement Monday.

This is like a SLOOOW CANCER growing across America. A cancer that republican governors have started. Notice how they SPIN their reasoning on how and why their voting restrictions are needed? Reminds me soooooo so so much of the South during pre-civil rights days. Blacks forced to use separate bathrooms from Whites, to use separate drinking fountains, to even use separate laundromats under the entrance sign "COLOR LAUNDROMAT".

That attack upon democracy back in the 50's and 60's is being used and defended in the very same way and by using the very same tactics that state republicans like IA Kim Reynolds are using today to defend and justify their passing of voter suppression. When THIS is allowed to happen and allowed to happen so easily, and with few citizens appearing to even care, that is when I wonder if America has indeed come to an end. Blacks marched in the streets to obtain their voting rights, we all should be out marching in the streets when any republican state government try to take away voting rights. WHERE IS THE OUTRAGE ????

Mainly yes ... really what they want is any Democrat prevented from voting.

Problem is the actual GOP officials are straight-up on the side of evil and thus what most of us would consider morally wrong is a non-issue for them.

The average GOP voter is so damn stupid/ignorant they buy right in.

Republicans hate democracy even more than they hate science.

The party of Trump would mostly rather commit sedition and treason than be graceful losers facing unfortunate math. Their evidence free conspiracy theories are somehow worth more than the right to vote, that most precious of rights already paid for by American blood and sweat. What a crock of shit. Can't blame any Georgian for having a big problem with that. Example # 9,962 of why you don't want republican governance.
