OK this sapphire 970 pro works fine except no dvi. if I use the dvi to vga adapter it's fine.

I only have access to one dvi capable monitor right now. if I hook up only 1 monitor to the dvi port, the pc will boot up. but no display. if I pull the monitor cable out I get no signal display from the monitor, so it seems to know something is there.

I've installed the 9700 in another computer and still don't get output from the dvi port. the weird thing is this setup worked fine a week ago.
I can only hope that either the monitor or the cable is bad.

question: if the only monitor is hooked up with the DVI port (no vga adapter) I should get bios boot messages correct?

Is there an input selector button to switch between VGA and DVI? Yes, if you have DVI connected you will have a signal throughout POSTing and autochecking. If your Monitor is staying in hibernate or is carrying no signal, nothign is coming from your DVI port. Double-check your input selector if yourr monitor is dual-input or multi-input capable.

the monitor connected through the DVI input should show the same info as vga out when booting up

I recently went through the same experience as you did when I was installing an ATI 9000 and trying to use the DVI-out. The 9000 was to replace a working 8500 Radeon DVI setup. I wanted a fanless vidcard and was going to put the 8500 in my other box.

To make a long story short, I tried 3 different 9000s and none of them would give me any DVI signal. The cards would work fine in analog but not in DVI. I tried these cards on two different computers and got the exact same results. I talked to the manufacturer's (Sapphire) tech-support and they couldn't help me, the didn't even have a DVI monitor they could use to test the card(s) with. Their only DVI monitor was at Comdex! I posted here at AT and at several other forums (including Rage3D) and no one was able to help. I finally gave up and bought a fanless Radeon 7500 with DVI and it worked fine right out of the box.

So, is it Sapphire? Is it something different about the 9000/9700 series of cards? Why should 7500/8500s work fine and the newer ones won't? I'd love to try a 9500 but I'm scared that I'll have the same trouble with it. There doesn't seem to be very many people that even use DVI so there's very little experience with this issue.

I have a Sapphire radeon 9000 (newegg oem) that has DVI and vga. I have no problems with using the DVI to my Dell LCD.
So it migh a deffective card. Not necessarily a saphire 9000 or 9700 problem.
