No DVD will play

so I have a new BFG 8800 GTS and a new 22 inch monitor 225BW Samsung. it's fine for gaming, but I can't get a DVD to play. my dvd player simply starts trying to play it, and it seems it can't figure out the aspect ratio... I know 22inch monitors have some ratio issues... is that what's happening? Any thoughts?
