No Divx in Windows XP? Help

Ive downloaded the new Divx Codecs, I think. Now when I try to run some .divx .avi file i downloaded, i get the microsoft installer popping up, then i need to find this file or whatever. How can I make sure I have the Divx codecs? Im not sure, although I did install them. What should I do?

*.avi files are not encoded using the divx codec. It is important to note the difference between compressed and uncompressed *.avi files. You can look into your add/remove program listing to determine if you have the divx codec installed on your machine.

.divx.avi is a naming convention for divx files, originally divx was a hacked version of the ms codec .. eh but anyway, you could have a corrupt divx file, maybe incomplete .. what version of divx do you have? go ahead and install 4.12 (note: you can also have 3.11 coexist with 4.12 .. this may help with programs like xmpeg) ..
