No digital out on X-fi = dealbreaker. (Nevermind, got it to work, here's how)

[EDIT]

Actually it does have it! Eureka, what you have to do is change go back into the installation program where you set the speaker to either digital or analog, and switch it to digital, and then select SPDIF Passthrough on the decoder tab inside the control panel.

It just must be done through the installation program, which is unusual, but hell, it freaking works which is great!!

You can just get a $30 chaintech card and use it when you want to get SPDIF out.

Wait, couldn't you get the bay, seperately?

Is a digital out jack the same as a SPDIF? Because I can program my digital out jack on my Audigy LS to role play as an SPDIF through software, and it is supported by my receiver as the detection automatically switches over to Pro Logic or Dolby Surround settings. It's so sweet~

I think you must have mistakened, or either X-fi really is pushing for the upper cards to offer what someone may want from a typical ZS.

edit: that is, if you only want to use 1 soundcard alone.

You can configure the Flexijack for digital input/output.

That would be great, but how do I connect my DVD player to the digital output? On the Audigy 2, it was thru a cable from DVD-rw to Audigy 2 card (SPDIF passthrough)... there is no such thing on the X-Fi...

You don't need to connect the DVD-RW to the soundcard at all. All the data, video and audio is passed over the EIDE cable.

There will be a hack for this that will require a few minutes of your time, and a open blank cover plate on your pc for the RCA jack... haha

It's a simple mini to RCA adapter and you can use the COAX digital in on your receiver.

take a look at this thread and scroll about halfway down

N.B. This digital socket on the Sound Blaster cards doubles as the digital coax output. If you don't have digital DIN, you can use a mono or stereo mini-jack > RCA converter to connect to the coax input on your speakers, as the front R/L or AC3/DTS signals are sent through the tip of the plug.
Yes, in other words it just works like every other SPDIF output. You get either 2 channel uncompressed PCM, or surround audio via pre-encoded DD/DTS. The only difference is the soundcard can output 3 sets of SPDIF signals for 5.1 uncompressed digital audio, but this only supported by some multimedia speaker systems and a few high-end receivers.

Those two had quite the argument about it, but I think that Accord99 is correct. You just need a mini-->RCA adapter cable.

The Soundblaster.com site refers to it as an INPUT only.

FlexiJack (Performing a 3-in-1 function, Digital In / Line In / Microphone)

This is from THG's review:
The PCI card has a single 1/8th inch (3.5 mm) input jack called a "FlexiJack", which can be configured via the driver to serve as a line input, mic input, or digital connection for input and output.

so....I dunno, he's just gonna have to try it out. But there is a "digital output only" option in the windows advanced mixer settings.

Honeslty no, I *LIKE* it and bought it at best buy ... I really want to keep it and would like to get the X-Ram version if it hits a more decent price.

From the xbit review they talk about how XRam will allow game developers to use much higher quality sound AND improve FPS, which I think would be awesome.

I'm mainly keeping this one to see what the Fatalty debuts at online. (Hopefully less than best buy.)

I will play around with it and try to make it work

It would be beter if you had the original post all typed up, and the topic title changed to:
"Orignal Topic Title Blahblah: SOLUTION FOUND" Or something of the like. Might help others you know?

I'm surprised you'd have to go through the installation. You can select digital output via the "advanced button" under Main Volume in the windows volume app. I was pretty sure there was also an option for it in the Audio Console too....

The X-Fi doesn't do DDL. There was a post from someone on AVSForums who works for Nordic Hardware and got a factory tour of Creative Labs. He said he asked someone there why their cards don't do Dolby Digital Live. The person said that Creative wants to use full-bandwidth audio rather than compressing it with DDL, if I remember correctly. I'll try to remember to dig up that post later.
