No dialing modem connection?

This is my first post here. Thank you for help me with it.

My roommate and I share the same phone line at home. So our modems are actually connected to each other. Last night, we tried every effort to connect with each other, but got nothing.

As my understanding, modems can be used the same way as ethernet card. So in order to connect via modem, we should set the TCP/IP from dialup adapter. And primary logon set as the "client for microsoft network". I'm not sure whether this is right or not.

And someone also tell me. Modem should be waken up in order to be connected, so how can I wake up the modems without dialing? (actually, dialing is not possible since we are sharing the same phone number)

Thank you so much for your help.

The only way your are going to connect to your buddy's computer is if you have two phone lines and one of you dials into the other's computer. It just ain't gonna happen on 1 phone line. You mine as well pop for two ethernet cards and some cat5 cabling rather than pay the phone company more every month.
