hey folks,

i bought an emachine for a cousin that has a conexant software modem. the modem is recognized by the machine but is unable to get a dial tone. the phone line is fine since the phone works on it. however, when i try to connect to the isp, no dial tone error 637 or something like that appears. can someone help out please. he wants it working and i am pissed that it isn't. if i had more time, i would have built him one urrggghhh. but this is taking more time than i anticipated :(

thank you again for any assistance.

firstly, is your cable ok & secure in the socket & modem.
don't know where your at but do you have any services on your line like call waiting which can sometimes change the dial tone so that its not recognised by the modem. you'll need to try unchecking wait for dialling tone under modem/properties/connection.

Make sure the phone line from the wall is in line and not [/b] phone on the modem.

Kill TSR's by hitting ctrl+alt+delete and leaving only explorer and systray.

You're not using Windows 2000, are you? I tried installing Win2k on my e-machine and the modem is not compatible with Win2k. It was doing what you described. Windows recognized the modem until it looked for a dialtone and couldn't find it. Works fine in Win98 and WinME, though.

That is a common failure mode for Conexant winmodems. This time, get a Lucent or ESS based one. The cheap DCI/Creative is a decent ESS based.

thank you for all the reply

1) the default os is win me

2) i have checked all the phone or line in sockets and those are correct, i didn't have them
switched around

3) i can't disable wait for dial tone because there is just no connection at all. i tried
hooking up a phone via the "phone" socket: wall phone outlet --> modem line in --> actual
phone to make calls... nada

4) yeah, i'll try to look for a lucent... free hopefully :)
