Depends on what Rage is like. Doom 3 multiplayer was terrible and no DS is not a big deal since it's a SP game. Now if something like ET:QW didn't have DS, it would be a worthless coaster.

so stupid to abandon DS..i just dont get it

for some games, i absolutely agree no ds, great decision..but NOT for games where ping or server performance is actually an issue..when you are trying to shoot people who are moving around in real time it just doesnt make sense ..what if the person who is hosting the game has a shitty PC? it just makes no sense

No DS might work ok for consoles, but on PC people will inevitably try to host games even though their comp doesn't even meet minimum specs and is loaded with spyware. You also don't get the community aspect of always playing on the same server against the same people.

I still don't get what their motivation is for not including DS. What's in it for them? It can't be piracy because you pretty much can't pirate online games anyway.

Well, part of the anti-piracy argument is that you can play pirated games online when running hacked dedicated servers.

As for Rage...well, given their track record as of late, Id will at least do you the benefit of making a game you don't want to play online anyway.

I'd be much more interesting in hearing if licensees of the engine will have the option of including DS or not. It's a much bigger issue if it's simply impossible to offer DS in the engine, because that means when other companies use the engine to make games you might actually want to play, it won't be there.

I hold the same sentiments as Phatose. Rage will likely be a long story driven FPS (I Hope).

I don't think you people understand that Rage multiplayer will essentially be a co-op type game, maybe with a minimal 4-8 player deathmatch like Doom 3 was initially. Maybe they will expand that with a patch later on, but tbh it really isn't needed.

The situation with Rage/ID is completely different from CoD:MW2

Well, part of the anti-piracy argument is that you can play pirated games online when running hacked dedicated servers.

True but how many people actually do that? I was under the impression that there are few enough cracked servers that it doesn't have a significant impact.

If you clearly make the game worse just to kill this small bit of piracy, that might actually motivate hackers to get aggressive and hack the game to bypass the lobby entirely and redirect to a pirate lobby. Considering WOW and other MMOs were hacked to allow private servers, I don't think this is too much of a stretch. This would probably make the piracy problem much worse, since pirates wouldn't need to rely on finding cracked dedicated servers anymore.

I realize that Rage multiplayer will probably be coop with a small amount of players, but look at L4D. Even though there's a centralized lobby, most people still choose to play on dedicated servers because you just get better performance that way. People want to host servers (for free) so why not let them?

have there ever really been piracy problems with a popular online game that requires CD key authentication? like, ever?

yeah, thought not. id can suck it, they havn't made a good game in a decade, anyway.
