No custom resolutions in Vista?

I'm running Vista Home Premium on my HTPC, with an 8500GT. My TV's default resolution is 1366x768, but the only setting I can get is 1360x768. This wasn't a big deal in XP; I just created a custom resolution. But I can't seem to find it in the control panel for Vista. I am using the latest drivers.

Yup. No custom resolution for vista. I don't think Nvidia is going to add this feature either.

Well, at least there's confirmation that I'm not crazy. 😉 I tried PowerStrip but it doesn't work either. Apparently Vista is pretty particular on the resolutions it allows for monitors if it doesn't detect the proper EDID. It detects my TV as a Generic PnP monitor, so that's probably why I'm stuck with standard resolutions. And, AFAIK Vizio doesn't have any .inf's for their TVs . . .

Thanks for the confirmation.

Using the HDMI or TV out from an ATI card (i have the HD2900XT), the Catalyst Control center allows you to adjust a custom rez to fix overscan/underscan issues.

Vista will not allow this directly from the OS, but a driver should if the option is there. If you use VGA or DVI out then I'm afraid I don't know what to tell you.

My TV (Vizio VX37L) only allows 720p over HDMI. I think the picture quality is a bit better using VGA, which is why I'm using it. 🙂

IIRC, PowerStrip can be used to generate a custom .inf file, but I do not remember how.

(It's been years.)

Rivatuner?

Yeah, Rivatuner can make an inf file for you with specified resolutions and refresh rates. This is actually the best way to solve all refresh rate issues in XP, although people say it no longer works with Vista.

Forced refresh works in Vista. I use it to set the refresh rate to 70Hz at 1280x1024 when games set it to 60Hz. Works fine. You should be able to set a custom resolution as well using the same options.

Someone (Zenoth IIRC) in the OS forum couldn't get it to work, although I've never tried it myself as I still use XP.
