So my family has had the same router/modem/ISP/etc set up for over 3 years. (D-link DI-624).

-Since the start of the year, the internet connection to RoadRunner has been progressively worsening.
-The first couple of weeks, it would be out during peak usage times once or twice a week.
-A few weeks later, it would slow to a crawl all day and night for a few days then be totally out for a day, then it would go back to normal.
-TimeWarner / RoadRunner says that their hardware is functioning properly and that it must be our router.
-Since Monday, it has been 100% GONE. Nothing. No connection. HOWEVER, when the cable modem is hooked directly to one of the computers, the connection is fine.
-Router is replaced, problem persists. No new symptoms, was configured correctly and in every possible way, according to TW/RR's specifications. No response.
-Switched out cables to be certain it wasn't a bad cable.

Any suggestions?

WAN/Activity lights on the router blink once every few seconds, activity light on the modem blinks rapidly as normal.

I called a tech from TimeWarner, I believe it has something to do with the modem and I'll refuse to pay the bill if it is, seeing as the modem IS their hardware, but it would be great if I could figure this out in the next few hours and save the trouble.

Maybe it's a mac-address issue. I'm not familiar with RR or the model router that you are using, but if RR has a problem with the mac-address of your router's nic vs. the mac on your pc nic, that could induce some problems. See if you can clone your pc nic's mac on the router and try that.

That or just call them up and ask for the web page on their network that you have to go to "to register a new computer" AKA MAC addy. Mediacom does this. You can't add a router and have functional internet until you hop on their website and add the routers MAC address on their end.

Well, the tech came and went. We spent an hour just trying to figure out what was going on.

We went through trying all the things I have tried in the past couple of days and no new results.

On a whim, we swapped out the cable modem with a brand spanking new one, and after a few minutes it started working.

Now the internet is back up but working at a crawl. He made the suggestion that we should try running a dedicated cable line, and they're going to come Wednesday to take care of that.

Oi.

We'll see how things are going in a week. :(

Follow these instructions with the new router. Turn off the power to both the router AND the cable modem. Then, unscrew the coax cable connection the modem as well as the ethernet cable going to the router. Keep the modem turned off for ATLEAST a minute. After this, turn the modem back on with both cables still unplugged. Wait about 15 seconds, then plug the coax cable in. Wait for everything to sync back up, this should take approximately 30 seconds. After the modem has synched up again, connect the router ethernet cable to the cable modem and turn the router on. After the router is up and going, connect the computers ethernet cable to the router. After this, there should be a program on your computer from Road Runner called Medic. Find this and run the program, it'll test diagnostics to Road Runner.

The tech took care of most of this. He pinged a few sites and was noticing that some of the requests were dropped while others were super-fast. His assumption is that somewhere the line has some weather-related damages due to the snow - hence us getting the dedicated cable line. He said that since this problem is odd and since he can't confirm that this is the issue that it's being done for free... so that's really cool of them.
