No Computers For Sale

I had a strange experience this afternoon. I went shopping to buy a new off-the-shelf computer for a client. I went to Staples, Best Buy, and Office Depot, and found zero computers on the shelves. Wierd!

I then inquired as to why. The clerk showed me a whole aisle of boxes from HP, Dell, Toshiba, Acer, and E-Machines. She said, "There they all are, but we can't sell them until October 22nd." I asked "Why?" She replied, "Because Microsoft ordered that we not sell any machines until the Windows 7 release date."

I got the picture. Apparently they sold out of all the existing Vista and XP machines, and these were the new ones with Win 7 pre-installed.

So, here we are in a recession wanting consumers to spend, but they can't. So, I guess another week of no sales is OK.

Just bought 2 today from Dell's Outlet. 😛

Why should they? It's not MS's problem they can't manage inventory.

Dell's outlet? Well, we don't have such a store in Tucson. Or . . . are you talking on-line? If so - that does not count. I'm talking direct retail sales in a brick and mortar store. I'm surprised if Memphis has such an outlet.

Yeah, I meant online.

Any Windows 7 machines. They could still sell Vista based systems, if they had any in stock.

Storing stuff is expensive so many places only keep minimal inventory for a sort of just-in-time inventory. They only keep what they think they might sell in a week or in between deliveries because they don't have the space to store all the stuff. If they only get one shipment every week or two weeks and only keep enough computers in stock for that time period, it's very easy to see how they could run out of machines to sell.

Is this anyway to run a business? With Fedex it is. 😉

I saw the same thing at Best Buy last night. I was going to buy a netbook and there was next to nothing on the shelves.

Where this particular store is located, they did NOT sell out of Vista machines. They pulled merchandise off the shelves that could have been sold while we we wait for Win7. Stupid.

That is accurate, and agree . . . stupid. I suspect that they may be putting Windows 7 on all those Machines, and then all jumps back on the shelves on the 22nd. This, along with over a week of pent up demand will probably create an artificial bump up in sales coincident with the grand release of 7. It does seem stupid. Poetic justice would be if all buyers simply waited one more week and let THEM sweat it out. 🙂

Win 7 RTM has been available on MSDN for a month or two, but it's not yet available for sale to the general public until 10/22.

Your client is better off waiting anyhow. Thursday is pretty close.

Waaaaaa, I have to wait 4 days to get a new laptop!
