Add to your poll, education should be funded by the state/local not the fed.
95% of the funding is.
The fed is supposed to help out where it's most needed though.
But Bush's tax cut for the rich has put a damper on that.
Its hilarious how democrats bash Bush over education spending when over the past 3 years theres been a 57% increase over Clinton era levels. As for the unfunded mandate rhetoric by the left, the left came up with the idea of unfunded mandates and republicans fought them on it until the 1990s. Not to mention No Child Left Behind is NOT an unfunded mandate. It might be underfunded but states can opt out of the program if they find the funds insufficent.
When NCLB was signed, the Bill itself had a budget. We all know the Bush administration controls how much money goes into what every year when they write the budget. In 2003 Bush cut funding for NCLB by $7.2 Billion and in 2004 by $9.0 billion. For a man that has made NCLB a centerpiece he sure has shown that it isn't a top priority. Let's see....more tax cuts or properly funding an education bill that while the results might be unrealistic, you'll never know as long as it's underfunded. Maybe that was his plan so he can blame underfunding for lackluster results.
I have several friends that are teachers(mostly English) and they have noticed over the years that the FCAT(standardized test in Florida) has gone down in standards. Also Bush's brother(not Jeb) just so happens to be one of the people in charge of the FCAT. Of course the scores might seem they are going to go up. They have to teach their students to write essays with keywords that FCAT graders look forward. The problem is that FCAT graders aren't real teachers, they are normal people trained for about a week to look for specific keywords ONLY. If you happen to be a student that reads a lot and have a good vocabularly you can get a bad score because you used a more advanced word. This restricts kids creativity and hinders writing skills. It's just pathetic.
Just another example where Bush's policies have failed the American people. NCLB was a joke but better to be a properly funded joke than an underfunded joke.
